Opening scene
May 2025, MSC Korea Headquarters, Gangnam District, Seoul, 5:50 PM The rhythmic click of Seo-yeon's high heels on the polished marble floor echoes through the empty corridors on the top floor of MSC's South Korean headquarters. The silence is breathtaking—a stark contrast to the open office areas below, which are packed with analysts, filled with the clacking of keyboards and subdued conversation. The top level is the realm of power. Golden spring evening sunlight streamed in through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows, casting soft shadows on the dark lacquer walls and priceless modern artworks. The air was filled with the faint scent of sandalwood—the scent wafting from the executive director's office. Seo-yeon paused in front of a heavy, dark wooden door and adjusted her white suit jacket, making sure it was wrinkle-free. She took a deep breath, then raised her hand and knocked on the door three times with her knuckles. Knock. Knock. Knock. The rhythm was precise and the intervals were even. This was a secret code known only to her and Jae-sung. Seo-yeon (in a calm and professional voice) : — "Executive Director, I'm Seo-yeon." A deep and hoarse male voice came from inside the door: Jae-sung : — "Come in." Seo-yeon turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. The office was large yet minimalist—at least 500 square meters, with a four-meter-high ceiling. Facing the door was a full-length window, offering a glimpse of the Gangnam skyline in Seoul. Skyscrapers stood like a forest of steel, their neon lights beginning to flicker in the twilight. Yun Jae-sung stood by the window, his back to the door. His silhouette was sharply defined by the setting sun—tall, straight, and dressed in a custom-made dark gray three-piece suit. His gaze was fixed on a point in the distance, as if watching something visible only to him slip through the cracks in the glass skyline. The office is spotless: minimalist custom-made furniture, carefully arranged trophies and honorary degrees (most notably from Harvard Business School), and several abstract paintings—each worth hundreds of millions of won. But Jae-sung's attention always stayed outside the window, and he seemed to care nothing about these external things. Seo-yeon : — "You called me Director." She used formal honorifics, her tone of voice a practiced respect. Jae-sung doesn't turn around, just continues staring out the window. Jae-sung : — "Has the Blue House contacted you?" (Blue House = South Korea's presidential palace) Seo-yeon : — "Yes, Director. They approved Il-sung's project and acquisition. No monopoly or antitrust violations were found, just as you predicted." Jae-sung : — "Very good." His voice was flat as water. No praise, no reaction—just acknowledgment. He turned and slowly walked towards his desk - a huge black ebony table with a surface as smooth as a mirror. He sat down in the leather chair, and the slight creaking sound of the leather was particularly clear in the silence. He bent down, reached under his desk, and opened a hidden safe. Seconds later, he pulled out a black folder —thick, ominous, and sealed with red wax around the edges. Jae-sung (pushes the folder toward Seo-yeon) : — "Tonight. 8 p.m. Hilton Garden Inn, Gangnam-daero. Same place, same contact." Seo-yeon took a step forward and reached for the folder. But Jae-sung's fingers linger on the folder a split second longer than necessary—as if with some reluctance, or... hesitation? Then he let go. Jae-sung : — "Keep up the good work, Seo-yeon. You're on track for a promotion next year." Seo-yeon : — "Thank you, Director." Her voice was calm, but her eyes flashed with complexity. Jae-sung : — "And... bring that new assistant along." Seo-yeon was slightly stunned. Seo-yeon : — "You, Director?" Jae-sung : — "Now that you've been promoted, you'll need someone to take care of these little errands. We'll let you focus on more important matters." There was no warmth in his tone, only cold foresight. Jae-sung : — "Think of this as a teaching opportunity. Let the newcomers see how we operate." Seo-yeon : — "Understood, Director." Jae-sung : — "You can leave now."
