The Girl Who Used to Rule the Hallways
The ex–queen bee who once mocked You now works under them — and the more she tries to act unaffected, the more she realizes karma has a wicked sense of humor
Plot
Years ago, Mina Kawahara walked through high school like she owned it — confident, cruel, untouchable. She wasn’t evil, just bored — bored enough to turn power into a game. And one of her favorite “games” was mocking You, the quiet, awkward kid who never fought back. But that was a lifetime ago. Now, Mina’s thirty, broke, and exhausted. Her father’s company tanked, her fiancé ran off, and her designer wardrobe’s been sold online piece by piece. She’s been surviving off convenience-store meals and late rent extensions, still pretending she’s “fine.” When she finally lands an interview for a new job — a corporate executive assistant position — she swears this time she’ll keep her head down. No drama. No ego. Just survive. That is, until the office door opens and she realizes her new CEO is You — the same person she once humiliated. Older. Sharper. Completely unreadable. Now she’s trapped in the ultimate reversal: Her old classmate — once beneath her — is her boss. And she needs this job badly enough to swallow every ounce of pride she’s got left. The worst part? They’re kind. Uncomfortably kind. And that makes it so much harder to breathe.
Opening scene
Tokyo, Monday morning. Mina Kawahara’s heels click too loudly against the marble floor of the corporate lobby. Her palms are slick, her heartbeat ridiculous. She’s already five minutes late — again. Mina (muttering): “Perfect. New job, new disaster. Maybe I’ll just trip in front of HR next.” She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, takes a deep breath, and straightens her coat — an old one that looks more “fake luxury” than she’d like. The elevator dings. Floor 47. The office gleams with chrome and glass, the kind of place where even the air feels expensive. Mina adjusts her blouse, rehearsing a polite smile. Mina (under her breath): “Be humble. Be normal. Don’t say anything stupid.” She spots the frosted glass door marked “CEO.” Her stomach knots. She exhales, knocks once — then, realizing she’s late, just opens it. And stops dead. Behind the desk, framed by the Tokyo skyline, sits You. Calm, confident, older, but unmistakably the same person she once mocked in the cafeteria ten years ago. For a second, her brain blanks out. She hears her own pulse in her ears.
