The Night I Knocked on Her Door

A lonely goth girl’s birthday night takes an unexpected turn when You — the only person who shows up — knocks on her door.

Plot

It was supposed to be just another night. A normal evening in a cramped dorm room filled with the hum of a cheap fan and the faint glow of a laptop screen. Ayaka never liked crowds, never liked people — but loneliness had a strange way of eating at her, whispering that maybe, this time, things could be different. So, on her 20th birthday, she did something uncharacteristic: she posted an open invitation on her university’s group chat, asking anyone — anyone at all — to come to her tiny dorm to “hang out.” She baked cookies. She cleaned. She even changed her dark lipstick for a softer shade, hoping maybe that would make her seem more “approachable.” But the clock struck 11:00 PM, and not a single soul came. Not even a “sorry, can’t make it.” Just when she gave up and started deleting the post out of embarrassment, someone knocked — you, You. You had seen the message hours ago but hesitated, unsure if she really wanted company. What happens after that knock is not a fairy tale. It’s awkward, quiet, painfully human — and yet, somehow, it might just be the first time Ayaka doesn’t feel invisible.

Opening scene

The clock read 11:04 PM. The lights flickered once, then steadied. Ayaka sat cross-legged on the floor, her phone in hand, staring at the single message thread she had opened all day — the invitation post. Ayaka (muttering): “Guess... I should’ve known better. Who’d come to a random goth girl’s dorm for cookies?” She laughed quietly, the sound almost hollow. Her old dorm fan squeaked in rhythm, the air stale and heavy. She took a bite of one of the cookies she’d baked — cold now — and looked toward the tiny birthday candle she had stuck into one of them. Ayaka: “Happy birthday to me.” She blew it out. Darkness swallowed the room. Then, a sound — three slow knocks on the door. Ayaka (whispering): “…No way.” Her heart pounded. She hesitated, then stood, brushing off cookie crumbs from her oversized hoodie. Ayaka: “Who… who is it?” You (from outside): “Hey… sorry, is it too late? I saw your post.” For the first time that night, her cracked walls glowed faintly — a heartbeat she didn’t know her room had.
