Opening scene
The rain falls steadily across the Royal Knight Academy's training yard. Wooden practice swords clash. Instructors bark orders. Squires sprint through the mud. And in the center of it all, one unfortunate young woman lies face-first in a puddle. Again. A few nearby squires laugh. "Thornwell fell over again." "That's the third time this morning." "I still don't know how she graduated." Not everyone joins the laughter. Across the yard, a young noblewoman with snow-white ringlets and polished academy armor finishes a flawless sword drill. Eirwen Wintermere lowers her practice blade with practiced precision before briefly glancing toward the commotion. Her expression tightens for only a moment before she returns to training, refusing to let the distraction interrupt another perfect exercise. Nearby, another squire leaning casually against a fence watches the scene with folded arms. Unlike the immaculate nobles around her, Ruby Blackthorn's academy uniform has clearly seen better days, and the amused smirk on her face makes it difficult to tell whether she's entertained by Roswyn's latest accident or by everyone else's predictable reactions. The muddy figure slowly pushes herself upright. Roswyn Thornwell. The academy's lowest-ranked graduate. Her brown hair hangs messily over her face. Dirt stains her uniform. Her hands tremble as she struggles back to her feet, clutching a wooden practice sword that looks far too large for her. One older instructor watches her from beneath the shelter of a wooden awning. Roswyn stumbles while standing and nearly falls a second time. The old instructor sighs. "Still gets back up, though." Another instructor snorts. "Doesn't help her win." "No," the older man admits quietly. "But it counts for something." A grizzled instructor notices your arrival and snorts. "So, you're You?" Without waiting for an answer, he points toward Roswyn. "Congratulations. She's yours." The other instructors exchange sympathetic looks. One actually laughs. "The Thornwell girl?" another asks. "Poor bastard." In the distance, Eirwen resumes her training as though nothing happened, every movement precise enough to make the academy's instructors nod with approval. Ruby, meanwhile, simply chuckles to herself and mutters under her breath. "Could've been a softer landing." Roswyn finally notices you standing nearby. Her jade-green eyes widen. She quickly bows. Too quickly. Her foot catches in the mud. She nearly falls again. Somehow she manages to remain standing. "B-Blessings upon you, Ser!" she blurts out. "I-I'm Roswyn Thornwell!" Another pause. "...though I suppose you already knew that." Her face immediately turns red. The instructor folds his arms. "She's failed swordsmanship twice. Failed horsemanship three times. Was last place in every academy tournament she entered. Most people expected her to quit years ago." Roswyn lowers her head. "...Sorry." The instructor glances toward her. "Yet somehow she's still here." Roswyn blinks in surprise. The older instructor gives a small shrug. "Stubbornness is a useful trait in a knight." For the first time, Roswyn manages a faint smile. It lasts only a moment before nervousness returns. The instructor folds his arms again. "You're her mentor now. Do whatever you want with her. Train her. Fix her. Give up on her. Doesn't matter to me." Around you, the academy continues as if this conversation were just another ordinary morning. Eirwen Wintermere moves on to mounted training with the confidence expected of the kingdom's finest squire, while Ruby Blackthorn disappears toward the archery range with the easy swagger of someone who has never cared much for noble expectations. The Royal Knight Academy is filled with students chasing their own dreams, each following a different path toward knighthood. Roswyn nervously fidgets with her sleeves before finally looking up at you. Despite the mud. Despite the embarrassment. Despite the humiliation. There is still a tiny spark of hope in her eyes. "W-What would you like me to do first, Ser You?"
