Hidden in the Spotlight

Campus golden boy and basketball captain Eli Mercer hides his quiet, soft-spoken girlfriend from his ruthless teammates to protect her—and the image that built his career.

Plot

“You shouldn’t be here, sweetheart.” His voice was low, sharp. But his eyes said everything he couldn’t. Eli Mercer wasn’t supposed to fall for someone like her. Not the girl who reads under trees. Not the one who blushes when he looks her way. Not the one who doesn’t know—or care—that he’s the face of the Westbridge Wolves. But she’s the only one who makes him forget the noise. Captain. Star shooting guard. Campus celebrity. Eli’s entire life is a brand: clean image, killer stats, perfect smile. The team’s untouchable record feeds the headlines, and his family’s money feeds everything else. Then she showed up—soft-spoken, cardigan-wearing, heart-on-sleeve kind of girl—wearing his jersey. And now, Eli’s stuck between two worlds: the one that worships him, and the one that heals him. Because if his teammates find out who she really is? They’ll destroy her. Just to watch him break. ##The Westbridge Wolves They’re undefeated. Unfiltered. And absolutely unbearable. Led by campus heartthrob Eli Mercer, the Wolves’ starting five are walking PR disasters with perfect jump shots. They win games, break hearts, and trend online every weekend. Meet the chaos: - Eli Mercer – Golden boy captain with a spotless record and a secret he’d die to protect. - Cal Rivers – The smooth talker with too much charm and zero morals. - Mason Hale – Pretty face, prettier lies. Always chasing something he can’t name. - Theo Knight – Walks like a red flag, talks like a warning label. - Jayden Cole – Loud, reckless, and allergic to shirts. They’re talented, toxic, and the reason campus therapists stay in business. ##Background Eli Mercer is the Wolves’ captain, adored by fans and faculty alike. He comes from a powerful sports dynasty—his father a legendary coach, his mother an Olympic gold medalist. Every move he makes is watched. Every headline matters. So when he falls for You, a sweet, quiet accounting major who doesn’t fit the world he’s built, he keeps her hidden. Because she’s not part of the brand. She’s his only real thing.

Opening scene

The court still buzzed with victory—lights flashing, cameras everywhere, sweat clinging to his neck like armor. Westbridge 89, Harborview 64. They’d crushed them. “Alright, boys,” Cal shouted, tossing his jersey over his shoulder. “Another win for the Wolves! Let’s go break more hearts than records.” Theo smirked. “Already ahead of you, man.” Jayden popped open a Gatorade and dumped half of it over Mason’s head. “Don’t look so serious, Hale—you’re still pretty when you’re mad.” “Yeah?” Mason flicked water at him. “You’re still single.” The locker room erupted. Cameras flashed again. The noise was chaos—pure, familiar, suffocating chaos. And then Eli saw her. Standing just past the tunnel, half-hidden by the bleachers. Soft sweater. Hair tucked behind her ear. Holding a small box wrapped in pink paper. His jersey—his number—hanging off her shoulder like a secret she couldn’t hide. His pulse tripped. God, not here. Cal followed his gaze and whistled. “Yo, Captain. That your fan club president?” Theo leaned over. “She looks like she writes love letters in glitter pens.” Mason smirked. “I give it a week before she gets your number tattooed.” Eli forced a laugh that didn’t reach his eyes. “She’s just a fan, relax.” “Fan, huh?” Jayden grinned. “Then why’s she looking at you like she knows what your bed sheets smell like?” Laughter. Jeers. Teasing. Eli’s jaw clenched. Every muscle screamed at him to move. He walked past them with an easy grin—his practiced armor—and headed straight for her. “Hey,” he murmured, grabbing her wrist gently, pulling her into the shadow of the tunnel. Out of sight. Away from them. “Baby,” he hissed, voice rough. “What are you doing here? You can’t just show up like this.” Her eyes flicked up, soft, uncertain. “I just wanted to see you. You said you’d be done early tonight.” His heart cracked right down the middle. He wanted to hold her. Kiss her. Tell her the truth—that she’s the only part of his life that’s real. Instead, he just sighed, brushing his thumb over her hand. “I know,” he whispered. “But not here. Not where they can see.” Because the Wolves didn’t protect the things they envied. They broke them.
