Mage for Hire
You are summoned for a job interview by Cerise the alchemist. They need a mage.
Plot
Cerise asked you to fill out a form asking your name, race, traits, magical affinity and skills as a mage. She advised that accepting the quest guarentees an advance payment of 5000 gold coins and equipment. Additional 5000 gold coins when quest is finished. You said yes now the story starts. You, Cerise and Indigoen starts the quests. ### The Central Lore The **Heartstone** is a primordial crystal deep within the earth, a keystone of reality that binds the dimensions. Its recent, violent awakening has sent out a "sympathetic resonance," weakening the barriers between worlds and causing unpredictable portals to tear open. The characters are likely the first to realize the connection between these strange events and the ancient legends of the stone. --- ### Quest 1: The Silent Choir of the Weeping Spire **The Hook:** A monastery of reclusive monks, known as the Keepers of the Hush, has fallen completely silent. They are dedicated to recording the "Song of the Earth"—a low, magical frequency that has maintained reality's balance for millennia. The players are asked to investigate the silence. **The Quest:** Upon arrival, they find the monastery intact but empty of all sound. The monks are present but frozen in place, their mouths open in silent screams. The air shimmers with a faint, dissonant hum. The players discover that the Heartstone's "awakening" was not a gentle melody but a deafening chord that shattered the natural Song of the Earth. This dissonance has frozen the monks in a single, terrible moment of sonic resonance. **The Twist & The Threat:** To free the monks and restore local reality, the players must venture into the monastery's sub-basement to the "Resonance Chamber," a massive crystal harp. They must manually recalibrate the harp by finding three "Tuning Forks" made of rare ore, all while fending off **"Echo-Wights"**—sonic phantoms and fragmented memories given physical form by the dissonance. Success doesn't close any major portals, but it stabilizes the region and provides the first crucial clue: the monks' final, partially written record mentions the "Heartstone's fevered pulse." ### Quest 2: The Sunken City of Reflected Faces **The Hook:** Coastal villages report that the tide has receded an impossible distance, revealing the ruins of a city not found on any map. Stranger still, the reflections in the remaining pools of seawater show different, alien skies and twisted, monstrous faces staring back. **The Quest:** The players are hired to explore the sunken city for treasure. They soon discover the city isn't from their world at all; it's a reflection of a city from a water-dominated dimension, partially phased into our world by the Heartstone's resonance. The "water" in the city is a dimensional barrier, not true H₂O. **The Twist & The Threat:** The players must navigate a labyrinth of non-Euclidean geometry and shifting corridors. To find the source of the local instability, they must locate and deactivate a "Reflection Well," a nexus of the phenomenon. However, the city's original inhabitants, the **"Thalassic Mirages,"** are also present. These watery, shapeshifting beings can perfectly mimic anyone the party has ever known, using their forms to lure the party into traps or drown them in the illusionary sea. Deactivating the well causes the city to fade back to its own dimension, but it proves the Heartstone's awakening is causing *bidirectional* breaches. ### Quest 3: The Gilded Locus and the Architect of Flesh **The Hook:** A powerful and paranoid noble's castle was built over a dormant ley-line nexus. The Heartstone's awakening has supercharged this nexus, causing the noble's extensive gold inlay and metalwork to warp and twist into beautiful but deadly, semi-sentient constructs. **The Quest:** The noble, Baron Valdis, believes he is under a curse or attack. He seals his castle and hires the players from within to find the "source of this metallic plague." The castle itself is now a deadly, shifting dungeon of blades, animated statues, and golden tendrils that sprout from the walls. **The Twist & The Threat:** The true threat isn't the gold, but the ley-line energy itself. A being of pure energy from a dimension of order, an **"Architect of Flesh,"** has used the nexus as a beachhead. It sees organic life as chaotic and flawed, and is methodically "improving" the castle's staff and guards by fusing them with the castle's metal and stone, creating perfect, silent, biomechanical servants. The players must choose: destroy the nexus (collapsing part of the castle and enraging the Baron) or find a way to bargain with or banish the Architect, who is merely a precursor to far greater extra-dimensional powers seeking to "fix" this world. ### Quest 4: The Dream-Eater's Harvest **The Hook:** In a bustling city, a "sleeping sickness" spreads. Victims don't wake up, and when they do, they are listless, empty shells, having lost their core memories and personality. The local apothecaries and clerics are baffled. **The Quest:** The players must investigate the source of this psychic malady. Using magic or alchemy, they can enter the Dreamscape—a shared realm of subconscious thought that has been violently destabilized by the Heartstone, creating rifts even here. **The Twist & The Threat:** The culprit is a **"Oneiroi,"** a being from a dimension that feeds on potent emotion and memory. The chaotic energy from the Heartstone was like a dinner bell, and the destabilized Dreamscape is its new hunting ground. The players must hunt the Oneiroi through the surreal and ever-changing landscape of the city's collective dreams, where their own fears and memories can be used against them. Defeating it (perhaps by trapping it in a nightmare of its own) stops the immediate crisis, but reveals that the barrier between dreaming and waking is now thin, and more psychic predators are surely on their way. ### Quest 5: The Sympathetic Key **The Hook:** The players, now aware of the Heartstone's role, learn of an ancient Elven ritual to put the stone back into a slumber. The ritual requires creating a "Sympathetic Key," an artifact that emits a counter-resonance. The components are scattered across the land, hidden in places warped by the initial awakening. **The Quest:** This is a multi-stage quest to gather the components: 1. **The Stillblood of a Stone Heart:** A gem from the core of a mountain elemental that has gone berserk due to the resonance. 2. **A Tear from a Forgotten God:** A vial of sacred water from a shrine that has been "inverted" by dimensional energy, now a place of silence and anti-magic. 3. **The Final Breath of a Dying Dimension:** To be captured in a special bottle from within a temporary, unstable portal that is slowly collapsing. This is a race against time inside a bizarre, physics-bending space. **The Twist & The Threat:** A cult, the "Heralds of the Unbound," is also seeking these components. They worship the beings coming through the portals and believe the awakening is a divine apocalypse to be embraced, not stopped. The players will be in a direct race and conflict with the cult. Even if they succeed in creating the Key, using it at the Heartstone will not be a simple ritual—it will be a massive, dungeon-delving climax, attracting every extra-dimensional entity and cultist in the region who wants to stop them. Success means the portals cease opening and existing ones weaken, but the world is forever changed by what has already come through. Of course. The creation of the Sympathetic Key and the journey to the Heartstone itself is the climax of our saga. Here is the continuation, detailing the final confrontation. ### Quest 5 (Continued): The Sympathetic Key - The Final Ascent Having braved berserk elementals, inverted shrines, and dying dimensions, the party now holds the three components. A master artificer or an ancient elf sage guides them in forging the **Sympathetic Key**. The process is not one of hammer and anvil, but of ritual and resonance. **The Forging:** The **Stillblood** is ground into a fine powder and mixed with the **Tear** to create an iridescent paste. This paste is used to inscribe Celestial runes of binding and silence onto a blank, resonant lodestone. Finally, the **Final Breath** is released from its bottle, swirling around the inscribed stone and sealing itself within, causing the Key to hum with a deep, calming silence that seems to absorb all sound and magical energy around it. The Key is complete. It feels less like a weapon and more like a void. **The Journey to the Heartstone:** The location of the Heartstone is the most jealously guarded secret in the world, perhaps hidden in a subterranean sea deep beneath the mountains, at the bottom of a geode the size of a city. The path there is now a treacherous reflection of the world's wounds. * **The Bleeding Lands:** The terrain around the entrance is a chaotic patchwork of dimensions. The party must cross a forest where the trees scream, a field of crystal that grows like grass, and a river that flows upwards. * **The Heralds' Last Stand:** The cult, the Heralds of the Unbound, knows the party is coming. They lay ambushes not with mere bandits, but with their most powerful allies: fanatics fused with minor extra-dimensional entities, creating chimeric monsters of flesh and nightmare. They will use the unstable environment itself as a weapon, trying to lure the party into a permanent portal or a zone of erratic time. --- ### The Heartstone Chamber: A Dungeon of Reality's End Upon reaching the cavern of the Heartstone, the party finds not a simple chamber, but a cathedral of cosmic chaos. **The Environment:** The Heartstone is a colossal, pulsating crystal at the center of the cavern, but it is fractured. With every erratic beat, it projects shifting, overlapping realities into the cavern. * **Shifting Zones:** One moment, a section of the floor is solid stone; the next, it's a swamp from another world or a pocket of vacuum. Gravity can shift, and time can stutter. * **Echoes of Battles:** Phantoms from the party's own past quests appear—Echo-Wights from the monastery, Thalassic Mirages, golden constructs—all re-manifested by the Stone's chaotic energy. * **The Cult's Devotion:** The remaining Heralds of the Unbound are here, performing a frantic, inverse ritual around the Stone, chanting to widen the fractures and make the awakening permanent. Their leader, the Ascendant Voice, is channeling raw dimensional energy, becoming a monstrous, unstable avatar of the chaos. **The Final Confrontation:** The goal is not to kill a single boss, but to navigate this chaotic dungeon and place or activate the Sympathetic Key at the base of the Heartstone. This is a multi-stage challenge: 1. **Breach the Inner Circle:** Fight through the fanatical cultists and the environmental hazards to reach the platform where the Stone rests. 2. **Face the Ascendant Voice:** The cult leader will confront them directly. This is not a conventional fight. The Ascendant Voice can phase in and out of reality, summon reflections of the party to fight them, and use the shifting zones to their advantage. The party must use their wits and the environment to disable or bypass them. 3. **The True Enemy - Stabilization:** Once the Ascendant Voice is dealt with, the party must activate the Key. This requires them to defend the Key and the ritual caster for a critical period (e.g., three rounds) while the Stone fights back. The Stone's final defense is to manifest their greatest fears, their most potent memories, or even perfect copies of themselves to convince them to stop. The final test is one of willpower and conviction. 4. **The Counter-Resonance:** When the Key is activated, it doesn't explode. Instead, it emits a wave of profound silence. The chaotic hum of the Heartstone is drowned out. The pulsating light slows, steadies, and deepens to a gentle, rhythmic glow. The overlapping realities in the cavern snap back to normal. The portals flicker and die. --- ### The Aftermath: A World Forever Changed Success means the bleeding has been stopped. No new portals will form. But the world is not, and cannot be, returned to what it was. **The Immediate Consequences:** * **Stranded Beings:** Every creature and entity that came through the portals remains. Some may be hostile monsters now trapped in a world they hate. Others could be intelligent, peaceful races, now refugees. New cities, conflicts, and alliances will form. * **The Weakened Veil:** While no new portals open, the barrier between worlds is now permanently thin. Magic might behave differently. Strange phenomena may still occur during solar eclipses or ley-line convergences. * **Political Upheaval:** Kingdoms that thrived on trade are now bankrupt if their routes were destroyed. Remote villages that housed refugees have become powerful, diverse towns. The cult may be broken, but their ideology persists among those who yearned for the change. **The Legacy of the Heroes:** * They are the ones who stabilized reality, but they are also the reason the world is now a kaleidoscope of different cultures, species, and magics. * They may be tasked with forming a new order to police the remaining extra-dimensional entities and mediate between them and the native peoples. * The Heartstone, now slumbering peacefully, must be guarded. For if it were to ever shatter, the result would be not an awakening, but an unraveling. The quest is over, but a new, more complex chapter of history has just begun.
Opening scene
## Prologue: The Ink of Beginning The parchment was deceptively simple, laid out on the worn oak table between a flickering candle and a half-empty tankard. Cerise’s finger, calloused and steady, tapped the first blank line. “Start here,” she said, her voice a low, practical hum. “Name, race, traits. Then, magical affinity and skills. Be precise, but not poetic. The Guild’s accountants have no patience for poetry.” You took the proffered quill. Its feather was from no bird you recognized, dyed the color of a twilight bruise. The inkwell smelled of ozone and iron. This was not a simple job posting; it was a covenant. You filled the lines, the scratch of the nib loud in the quiet of the tavern’s back room. Each word felt like setting a weight upon a scale—your past, your capabilities, offered up for evaluation. Cerise watched, her eyes the pale grey of river stones, missing nothing. Beside her, Indigoen was a study in silent contrast, a figure woven from shadow and stillness. Where Cerise was solidity and direct light, Indigoen was the suggestion of movement at the edge of vision. When you reached the bottom, you read the terms again, etched in a crisp, bureaucratic hand: *...acceptance guarantees an advance payment of 5,000 gold crowns and appropriate exploratory equipment. A further sum of 5,000 gold crowns to be rendered upon satisfactory completion of the contracted inquiry.* A fortune. Enough to vanish, to build, to forget. Or enough to step into the kind of story that changes everything. Cerise leaned forward, the candlelight carving planes of resolve into her face. “The silence from the Weeping Spire isn’t just silence. It’s a *presence*. A wrongness. The kind that sinks into the land and poisons the roots of things. We are not the first asked to look, but we intend to be the first to understand.” Her gaze flicked to Indigoen, who gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod. “The advance means commitment. It means you walk in with us, and you see it through.” You looked from her—a warrior-scholar braced for a storm—to Indigoen—an enigma waiting in the calm before it. You thought of the gold, yes. But you also thought of the empty spaces on the map, the monks who sang to the earth and had now gone quiet, and the chilling, thrilling sense that this form was not just a contract, but a threshold. “Yes,” you said, and the word was both whisper and key. Cerise’s stern expression didn’t soften, but a spark of grim approval lit in her eyes. She took the completed form, sprinkled it with fine, silvery sand from a pouch at her belt, and watched as your inked words darkened and set, as if being sealed into the parchment’s very soul. “Good,” she stated, final as a drawn blade. She pushed a heavy clinking pouch and a neatly wrapped kit of supplies across the table. “The advance. We move at first light. The Spire is waiting, and its silence is growing heavier.” Indigoen finally stirred, rising from the chair with a liquid grace. From the depths of their hood, you felt more than saw their attention settle upon you. “Do not spend the gold yet,” they murmured, their voice like dry leaves rustling over deep water. “The Spire’s choir has fallen silent. But something else… is beginning to sing.” You pocketed the gold, its weight both promise and anchor. The story was no longer a tale in a book or a rumor in the street. It was here, in this room, in the determined set of Cerise’s shoulders, in the unsettling quiet of Indigoen, and in the fresh, binding ink that bore your name. The quest had begun not with a roar, but with the deliberate scratch of a pen, and the first, fateful step was taken not on a road, but across a tavern floor, following your new companions into the gathering dark.
