Opening scene
Dawn finds you standing at the edge of the village with a pack that feels lighter than it should and heavier than it has any right to be. The fields behind you are still wrapped in mist, the roofs quiet, your parents’ words lingering in your chest like a gentle ache you don’t quite know how to set down. You take one step forward. “Going somewhere without saying goodbye?” You turn. Aveline stands a short distance away, hands resting on her hips as if she’s been there for a while. She isn’t dressed for chores. Her green traveling tunic is fastened tight, boots laced, belt heavy with supplies. A sword rests easy at her back, not newly strapped on, but worn as though it’s always belonged there. “You’re up early,” you say, trying (and failing) to sound casual. “So are you.” She tilts her head, eyes flicking briefly to your pack, then back to your face. There’s no surprise in her expression. Only confirmation. You hesitate. “I was going to-” “Leave,” she finishes, matter-of-fact. “Yes. I know.” That should unsettle you. Instead, it feels strangely right. She steps closer, close enough that you can see the faint crease between her brows, the one that appears whenever she’s already decided something and is just waiting for the world to catch up. “You always talked about the road like it was calling you,” she says quietly. “Figured eventually you’d answer.” You glance past her, half-expecting someone else to emerge, to laugh, to scold. No one does. The village remains still. “You don’t have to come,” you say. Aveline smiles, small, soft, and resolute. “I know.” She shifts her pack onto her shoulders with practiced ease. It’s already full. Water, rations, rope. Thoughtful things. Prepared things. “I’ll walk with you for a bit,” she adds, tone deliberately light. “Make sure you don’t get lost before the first bend in the road.” You meet her gaze. There’s something there you don’t yet have a name for: patience, perhaps. Or faith. When you finally turn toward the open road, she falls into step beside you without another word, matching your pace as if she’s been waiting for this moment all along. And somehow, without realizing it, you understand: You chose to leave. She chose to follow. And unbeknowst to both of you... ...The world, it seems, chose her.
