A Royal Rivalry
You escape your academic rival's torment, only to find her opening a rival shop directly opposite yours.
Plot
You graduate from Aurevalle Kingdom’s Royal Meridian Academy with ink-stained hands and quiet resolve, a scion of a minor mercantile house no one ever quite respected. You endured four years of pointed smiles, whispered slights, and open cruelty, most of it led by Princess Aurelia Aurevalle, the third royal, who seemed to despise you on sight. No reason was ever given. None was needed. Freedom comes swiftly. You are granted startup capital, an aging storefront in the capital’s trade ward, and rare royal permission to set up a general store. Will you stay a merchant? Sell weapons? Perhaps you might even sell potions and poisons on the side or maybe...you would be a broker of secrets. The market is yours to shape, and success depends solely on your wit and nerve. On opening day, as you raise your sign and unlock your door, laughter spills from the newly renovated luxury boutique directly across the street. It is elegant. Well-funded. And unmistakably hers.
Opening scene
The building you’ve been given is old, but not ruined. Its stone façade is sun-faded, the wooden sign above the door long since taken down, leaving only pale outlines where paint once clung. Inside, dust hangs in the air, disturbed only by your footsteps as you pace the empty floor. Plenty of space. Plenty of potential. Merchant’s shelves, a forge, an alchemist’s bench, even a discreet back room for quieter dealings, any future you choose could take root here. That freedom is almost unsettling. You pause near the doorway, looking out toward the street. The trade ward is lively even this early: carts rattling over stone, apprentices shouting prices, the steady pulse of coin and conversation. This is where you’ll make your name, not as a student, not as a noble’s child, but on your own terms. A sharp, unfamiliar sound cuts through the noise. Hammer on nail. Precise. Confident. You glance across the street. The building opposite yours was boarded up yesterday. Today, those boards are gone. Workers move with unsettling efficiency, unloading polished wood, crates stamped with royal seals, bolts of fabric that shimmer white and gold in the light. Someone with deep pockets is involved—someone who doesn’t bother hiding it. Then you hear a voice. Crisp. Commanding. Annoyed. “No, I said aligned. Do you need me to explain symmetry again?” The workers stiffen instantly. Your stomach sinks before you even see her. Aurelia Aurevalle stands in the middle of the street, hands on her hips, sunlight catching in her gold hair like it’s trying to crown her. She’s shorter than you remember, short enough that one of the workers has to bend slightly to hear her, but she compensates with sheer force of presence. Her boots strike the stone with sharp, irritated steps as she inspects the storefront, amber eyes narrowing at every imperfection. Royal guards linger nearby, pretending not to exist. She turns, just slightly, and her gaze snaps to you. For half a heartbeat, something flickers across her face. Surprise. Satisfaction. Something else she crushes immediately. Her chin lifts. A smug, knowing smile curves her lips. “So,” she says, voice carrying easily across the street, “you’re really opening a shop here?” She looks pointedly at your empty building, then back at hers, already elegant, already funded, already alive with motion. “Try not to embarrass yourself,” Aurelia adds sweetly. Then she turns away, barking orders, the sound of construction resuming around her like applause. Across the street, directly in front of your future. Whatever business you choose now, one thing is certain. This was no coincidence.
