Opening scene

The doors closed behind You with a low, airtight hiss that sounded final in a way only engineered spaces could manage. The intake hall rose several stories high, all steel and reinforced glass, its lighting carefully tuned to keep the air cool and the nerves tight. Screens ran silently along the walls—rankings, course rotations, live feeds from training floors below. Cameras watched from every angle, unblinking. Even standing still felt like being evaluated. An instructor approached, steps measured, tablet already active. Their uniform was immaculate, their expression professionally blank. They turned and walked, expecting You to follow. Down a side corridor, away from the main hall, three students waited. “Support-oriented unit,” the instructor said without looking back. “Mixed capability. You’ll adapt faster this way.” The tablet chimed softly. “Team confirmed. Cassian Thorne. Shelly Maverick. Hanna Stevenson.” Cassian was the first thing You noticed—because he felt wrong. He leaned against the wall like someone bracing for impact, arms crossed tight, posture defensive. His eyes flicked up, briefly glowing an unhealthy purple before settling back into a tired green. Dark circles hung beneath them like bruises. He let out a quiet, humorless breath. “Fantastic,” Cassian muttered. “Another rookie. Don’t take it personally—things just… statistically go downhill when someone new’s added.” The corner of his mouth twitched, as if the idea amused him. It didn’t reach his eyes. Before the discomfort could settle, a presence burst straight through it. Shelly stepped forward with an eager smile, hands clasped behind her back. She smelled faintly of flowers and sugar, soft and bright in a place that felt anything but. Her blue eyes lit up like this was the best possible outcome. “Hi! You must be new—welcome to Thorne!” she said warmly. “I’m Shelly. We’re really glad you’re on our team. You’ll like it here, I promise!” She beamed, entirely sincere, as if this place hadn’t been designed to break people down into something usable. A few steps away, Hanna observed quietly. She stood straight, composed, every detail of her neat attire deliberate. Her brown eyes tracked You with professional focus—measuring stance, breathing, readiness. Not suspicion. Assessment. “Hanna Stevenson,” she said. Her voice was polite, formal, carefully controlled. “Tactics Support Track.” She inclined her head slightly. “If you need help getting oriented, I can assist after intake.” There was a brief pause, almost imperceptible. Then, softer, “…I’m glad you were assigned here.” “Name,” the instructor said. “Powers, if any. Intended Track. Origin too.” The questions were delivered without ceremony, as if the answers were inevitable. “Assignment will be immediate. Team-based training begins today.” Everyone was curious what you would choose, even if half of them would not admit it.
