The Infinite Descent
The You descends through converging realities, facing ever-greater trials until you meet the gods at the dungeons core.
Plot
The air was thick with the scent of rain-soaked earth and the coppery tang of blood. You first real adventure—a simple goblin extermination contract—had gone catastrophically wrong, ambushed not by the foul green creatures, but by a pack of scarred, leather-clad bandits who had been using the goblins as unwitting scouts. Now, your fledgling party fled blindly through the dense, gnarled woods, the harsh shouts and snapping twigs of your pursuers closing in. Beside you, Elena, your steadfast companion and swordswoman, her arm bleeding from a glancing axe blow, urged you forward with a gritted-teeth whisper. "Not far now, You, to the old stone road. We can lose them there!" Close behind, Lyra, the archer, gasped for breath, her quiver empty. "They're everywhere!" she panted. At the rear, Mira, the young mage, stumbled, her face pale with exhaustion and fear, the last sparks of her mana fizzled out from their desperate flight. But the bandits were herding you, you realized too late. The trees suddenly parted, not onto a road, but before a sheer, moss-covered cliff face. Nestled within it, like a wound in the world itself, was a door. It was not made of wood or iron, but of a substance that devoured the fading twilight—a colossal slab of seamless, starless blackness, so dark it seemed to ripple with a hunger that pulled at your very soul. It stood ajar, a sliver of perfect, utter void visible beyond. A crude campsite with bedrolls and a cold fire pit lay scattered before it. The bandits hadn't chased you here; they had corralled you here. Their leader, a brute with a notched blade, grinned from the tree line, blocking your retreat. "Go on then, little heroes!" he jeered. "Try your luck with the Infinite Descent! Saves us the trouble of burying you." Terror seized your heart, cold and sharp. This was no refuge. Every instinct screamed that this doorway was a terminus, a maw. Yet, the bandits' blades were at your back, and in that pulsing darkness, you felt something else—a terrifying, bottomless potential, a whisper of ancient, slumbering power. The danger was absolute, a palpable pressure against your skin. But a desperate, foolish part of you wondered if that power could be a weapon, a salvation. Elena met your eyes, her face pale. Lyra nocked a nonexistent arrow, her hands trembling. Mira stared into the abyss, a strange, haunted recognition dawning in her wide eyes. The choice was an illusion. Step into the consuming dark, or fall to the bandits' steel. The door awaited, promising an escape far more perilous than the enemies at your back.
Opening scene
The transition wasn't a step, but a fall—a silent, chilling plunge through an endless midnight. There was no sound, no light, only a vacuum that stole your breath and unraveled the very fabric of your strength. You felt knowledge bleed away, muscle memory dissolve, the honed edge of your skills turning blunt and unfamiliar in your mind. In that eternal second, you were unmade. You hit the ground not with a crash, but a soft, deep thud into a bed of colossal ferns. The air returned, thick, humid, and rich with the scent of primal soil and strange, sweet pollen. Silence, for a heartbeat, then a chorus of gasps and rustling fabric. You pushed yourself up, your body feeling simultaneously lighter and clumsier, a stranger's skin. Around you, your companions did the same, their faces etched with identical shock and disorientation. Elena, always so sure and grounded, stared at her hands as if she'd never seen them before. The calluses from her sword were still there, but the ingrained balance, the warrior's instinct, was gone, replaced by a hollow, basic understanding of combat. Lyra flexed her fingers, her archer's draw gone slack, her eyes wide with panic. Mira, the mage, clutched at the air, her face a mask of profound loss. "It's... empty," she whispered, her voice trembling. "The weave... I can't feel it." A low, resonant boom echoed in the distance, not thunder, but something else—the sound of a tree the size of a castle keep falling. The very scale of the world was staggering. The trees here were pillars holding up a green sky, their trunks wider than village huts. Butterflies with wingspans larger than shields flitted through shafts of light that cut through the canopy like celestial spears. In the distance, mountains clawed at a sky so high it seemed a different shade of blue. A system prompt, cold and clear, materialized in the vision of each of you, words etched in faint light: Welcome to the First Layer of the Infinite Descent. All previous progression has been nullified. Choose your foundational path. This selection will determine your growth, your trials, and your survival. Below the message, five simple icons glowed, awaiting your mental touch: · A Shield - The Knight. Defender, protector. Strength lies in resilience and holding the line. · Crossed Swords - The Warrior. Unbridled offense and relentless force. Strength lies in aggression and breaking the enemy. · A Cloaked Dagger - The Assassin. Precision, stealth, and lethal strikes. Strength lies in evasion and critical weakness. · A Drawn Bow - The Archer. Distance, perception, and tactical control. Strength lies in safety and battlefield manipulation. · A Crackling Orb - The Mage. Understanding the new, unseen arcane laws. Strength lies in potential and elemental dominion. You looked at your companions, vulnerable and stripped bare in this titanic, terrifying new world. The choice was immediate, personal, and would define everything to come. What path did your soul grasp for in this moment of primal rebirth? You what do you choose?
