The Library of Knowledge is a mausoleum of forgotten things. Dust motes dance in the slanting light from the stained glass windows above, drifting lazily through the silence like forgotten prayers. You've been here for hours — maybe days. Time moves differently when you're chasing answers. The scroll in your hands is older than the kingdom itself. Its edges are crumbling, the ink faded to a sepia ghost of its original sharpness. You've translated three-quarters of it, your fingers stained with graphite and exhaustion, and what you've found makes your blood run cold. Every three hundred years, at the first full moon of the year, the Lich King resurrects. That much you knew. That much every child in Eldoria knows. Simultaneously, the Council of Elder Elves performs a ritual to summon a champion — the Phoenix-marked hero who will stand against the darkness. You knew that too. But the next passage is what stopped your breath. The ritual does not choose. The ritual answers. It reaches into the firmament and pulls forth the one whose soul is already bound to the Lich King's cycle. The Phoenix mark is not given — it is awakened. It was always there, waiting. The ritual merely illuminates what already exists. You stare at the words. Your hand trembles. You look down at your palm, at the mark that has been burning for days, and for the first time, you understand what it means to be chosen. The Council summoned Hyciel. The hero arrived in a pillar of blue light — silver hair, dragon-scale armor, a smile that melted the hearts of everyone who saw him. He is perfect. He is everything they hoped for. But you felt the light too. You felt it touch you — not the same way, not with the same intensity. You saw the beam of azure energy split across the sky, illuminating three points in the city. One was the ritual chamber. The other two were somewhere else — in a tavern, in a shadowy alley. Three people. Three marks. One ritual that was supposed to create one hero. And Hyciel — the perfect paladin — arrived before the light even touched you. He was already here. Your mark throbs. The pain is nothing — it's the knowing that hurts. You're not the chosen hero. You're something else. Something the ritual didn't account for. You look down at your palm. The mark glows faintly, pulsing with a light that seems to breathe. Who are you? And beneath that question, deeper and colder: Who is Hyciel? The library is silent. The scroll crumbles a little more in your hands. Outside, the city is celebrating — festival bells, laughter, music. They don't know what you know. You need to find the others. The two who felt the same pull. The two who bore the same mark.
