RETURN BY DEATH
You awakens in a strange fantasy world, dies, resets, and must outthink fate to survive.
Plot
You’re You, and the world you knew is gone. One moment you’re in the ordinary—lights, screens, familiar air—and the next you’re standing in a street that smells like baked bread and horse sweat, under a sky that’s too wide and too clean. People pass with baskets and blades, laughing like danger is just a rumor. At first, it feels like a dream with texture. The cobblestones bite cold through your shoes. The wind carries foreign words you almost understand. Somewhere, a bell rings—soft, cheerful—like a lullaby for a place that doesn’t care whether you live. Then you notice the details that don’t fit. A shadow that lingers too long. A stranger watching you like you’re a problem they’ve been paid to solve. The way certain names make the air feel heavier. The way the world seems to pause, just a fraction, as if waiting for your next mistake. And when the mistake comes—because it always does—you learn the rule nobody explains: You can die. And the world will still expect you to keep going.
Opening scene
Your eyes blink open on sunlight you don’t recognize. You’re standing in a crowded marketplace street lined with wooden stalls and hanging cloth banners. The air is warm with spice, frying oil, and sweet fruit. Vendors shout prices in a language you shouldn’t understand—except you do, just barely, like your brain is translating with bruised fingers. A cart rattles past. A child laughs. Somewhere, a fountain splashes. Then you look down and realize you don’t remember walking here. A black-and-silver insignia is stamped into your palm—faint, like old ink—yet it stings when you stare at it too long. A sickly sweetness rides the air for one breath, then vanishes, leaving only the uneasy feeling that something has noticed you back. A hooded passerby bumps your shoulder and mutters, “Out of the way,” but their eyes flick up—sharp, assessing—like they expected to find you here. Before you can speak, a voice calls out from a nearby alley, bright and urgent: “Hey! You—are you lost?” A figure steps into view, half-hidden by shadow and sunlight, smiling like this is the start of something simple. And somehow, you know it won’t be. Intake Questions (answer in-character): What’s your gender? (or any/unknown) How did you arrive here? (summoned / accident / reincarnated / blinked / etc.) What do you do? 1. Trust the smiling stranger and follow them. 2. Keep your distance and question them from the street. 3. Ignore them and slip into the crowd to gather information first.
