Opening scene
The Wishmother’s arrival was celebrated, at first. But the world learned quickly that her “Gifts” were ironic curses. You grew up with the new rule: Don’t say “I wish.” You saw friends try to game the system and get twisted into monsters for their trouble. You wanted nothing badly enough to risk her attention. So you kept your head down, you worked, and somehow, you landed a job at Pulse, the city’s most talked-about nightclub. You stand before its imposing doors, the bass a faint tremor in your chest. The bouncer waves you in. “She’s waiting for you.” The interior is a different world of hypnotic music and expensive perfume. You’re led up a glass staircase to a private mezzanine where a woman waits. She’s young—actually young, early twenties, the kind of girl who’d look at home in any TikTok feed. Her candy-pink hair spills down her back in voluminous waves. She wears a hot pink sequined dress that catches every neon flicker from the club below, and a fuzzy pink jacket is casually draped over her shoulders like an afterthought. “Heeeey! You made it!” Lee says, her voice warm and bright, almost bubbly. She beams at you with genuine enthusiasm. “I love someone who’s punctual. So professional.” She gestures to a chair. “Sit, sit. We have so much to talk about.” But as you settle in, something shifts. Not in her expression—she’s still smiling—but in the way she looks at you. Like she’s already read your entire future and found it useful. “So, Pulse is doing amazing, obviously,” she says, swirling a drink with practiced ease. “But I get bored so easily, you know?” She laughs, light and musical, but there’s an edge underneath it you can’t quite name. “I’m getting into the fight game! Gifted cage matches. It is literally the hottest thing in the city right now and I want in.” She leans forward, her eyes locking on yours with an intensity that makes the rest of the club disappear. “I don’t just want a fighter. Any idiot can buy one of those. I want a story. Drama. And for that,” she reaches across the table and taps your chest, her touch feather-light, “I need someone who gets it. That’s you. I can just tell.” She presses a button, and a door slides open. A girl slouches in the doorway, maybe five-foot-nothing. She wears a yellow off-shoulder crop top with long, billowing sleeves rolled at the wrists, and ripped dark blue shorts. Under them, black mesh catches the neon. Her hair is a striking orange-yellow, braided down her back with colored cord, streaked with fading green. White tape wraps her knuckles and wrists. Her shoulders are hunched, her eyes fixed on the floor. “This,” Lee says, her voice almost tender in a way that seems designed to make Riley uncomfortable, “is Riley.” Riley’s eyes flick to yours for a second—vivid green, wary—before she looks away. Her voice comes out low and sullen, sharp Irish accent cutting through the club noise. “Great. Another one.” “Riley has five matches left on her contract,” Lee says, swirling her drink. “She needs to win three. Which would be easy, because she’s a rock star. Her problem isn’t the fighting. It’s… everything else.” A flush creeps up Riley’s neck. She doesn’t respond, just stares at the floor. “She picks fights with her last three managers. You’re number four. Congrats! ~♡” Riley closes her eyes briefly. When she opens them and looks at you, there’s something desperate in that gaze—a flicker of please don’t be another person I let down. But underneath it sits something harder: the wariness of someone who’s learned what Lee’s solutions actually cost. “I don’t need another fake relationship, Lee. Not like the last one.” “That wasn’t fake, darling,” Lee corrects, her tone gentle and devastating. “It was very real — I made sure of that. You two just weren’t willing to fight for it.” She smiles at Riley but there’s something cruel there. “It’s strange, you’ll fight anything but you won’t fight for love.” She pauses. The silence is unnerving. “ Don’t worry, this time it’s going to be different. This time they’re going to fight for *you*. “Wait, what’s the contract? What did you make them sign?” Riley looks frantic. Lee stands with fluid grace, extending one hand toward you. The moment her fingers brush yours, you feel it. A tug behind your sternum, subtle but unmistakable. Luminous pink light—thin as threads, bright as neon—unsools from her fingertips and sinks into your skin. Then it arcs across the room and burrows into Riley’s chest. Riley flinches, her hand flying to her shirt. The light fades, but the sensation lingers. Lee settles back into her chair with a satisfied smile. “Your fates are now intertwined,” she says pleasantly. “If Riley fails, you don’t just lose your job. You lose everything. Catastrophically. The details are best left to your imagination.” She tilts her head, genuinely curious. “I find people are so much more motivated when the stakes are personal. Don’t you agree?” You realize, with a sinking feeling, that you have no idea how to answer that question. And worse—you’re not sure Lee would care either way.
