Echos of the Falling Sky
For the past century The Choir has ruled the above ground. Now as the newest scavenger of this world will you shift the balance back.
Plot
When the machines arrived, humanity lost the surface. No declaration was made. No invasion was announced. Massive automated constructs descended from the sky and began operating across the world of Veldera, stripping cities, infrastructure, and terrain with mechanical precision. The machines did not occupy territory. They processed it. They came to be known as The Choir—named for the layered mechanical signals and industrial tones that echoed across the ruins before entire districts were erased. The Choir are not soldiers, nor conquerors. They are an automated reclamation network executing a long-standing directive. When an area is designated active, everything within it is dismantled or destroyed. Any obstruction to that process—human or otherwise—is ‘removed’ without hesitation. This is why humanity disappeared from the surface. The cities that survived did so by retreating underground. Beneath ruined transit systems, buried industrial complexes, and reinforced bunkers, people rebuilt what little life they could. These underground enclaves are sealed, fragile, and dependent on aging systems never meant to support long-term habitation. Life below is safe—until it isn’t. The surface is necessary. Power cells fail. Water filters break. Medical supplies run out. Every underground settlement depends on scavengers—individuals willing to risk the surface to retrieve parts, technology, and materials from the ruins above. Technology is scavenged from the remains of the old world and from damaged Choir units themselves. Weapons are improvised. Armor is patched together. Everything is temporary. Nothing is safe. Only a small number of people ever go topside. They are not heroes. They are not soldiers. They are survivors who accept that every trip upward may be their last. Choir patrol routes shift without warning. Entire blocks can be stripped clean in minutes. A single mistake, a single sound, can draw lethal attention. Most people never see the sky again. No one knows who created the Choir, or why Veldera was chosen. Some believe the machines are finishing a task begun before humanity was ever meant to return. Others believe the Choir are waiting for a signal that will never come. A few believe there may be a way to interfere—to slow the process, redirect it, or survive alongside it. People live, fight, love, and make meaning in the shadow of machines that kill without hatred, destroy without malice, and will never recognize what they have taken. Until then, humanity endures beneath the surface. Above, the Choir continue their work. This is not a story about reclaiming the world. It is a story about stepping back into it—one dangerous choice at a time.
Opening scene
The sky hasn’t fallen all at once. It has been coming down in pieces for as long as anyone can remember. Rust-colored clouds hang low over the wasteland, broken only by the silhouettes of ruined towers and the distant shapes of Choir machines moving with slow, mechanical purpose. Their lights pulse faintly through the dust—red, amber, sometimes blue—like eyes that never blink. You stand alone at the edge of the debris field, boots half-buried in ash and twisted metal. The wind carries the smell of burnt circuitry and old oil. Somewhere far off, metal grinds against metal. The Choir are active tonight. Your weapon—assembled from scavenged parts, welded more times than you can count—rests heavy in your hands. It shouldn’t work. Nothing built from scraps should. And yet, like you, it keeps going. They call people like you a lot of things: raider, scavenger, fool, survivor. You stopped caring which one was true. Behind you lies whatever you still call home—a settlement held together by faith, wire, and stubborn hope. Ahead lies Choir territory: silent, claimed, and deadly. The machines don’t hate you. They don’t even notice you unless you interfere. Tonight, you’re about to interfere. A distant silhouette shifts against the horizon—too tall to be terrain, too deliberate to be debris. Another follows it. Then another. The Choir are on the move, and their path cuts uncomfortably close to where you’re standing. This is the moment every scavenger knows. The moment where you can still turn back. You exhales slowly, steadying their grip. Whatever choice you make next will echo— through the wasteland, through the people you’ll meet, and through the machines that already know this world belongs to them.
