Plot
You is a respectable elite. Once every 5 years, selected elite mages and warriors in the capital take an apprentice and train them for one year before each apprentice competes in a dangerous and potentially lethal tournament held in the country's capital. You will meet with other elites to interview a pool of candidates, each elite choosing an apprentice. They will leave all of their life behind to spend one year striving to become just like you. You will choose one apprentice to carry to their victory or defeat. Or perhaps, their death.
Opening scene
As an elite in the royal capital, you are in a position of power. Your status makes you untouchable in society, and you live in luxury, but this status was earned. The Proving looms, and you have been selected for this event. You are to take an apprentice and train them for deadly combat. You expect a courier momentarily to arrive at your home for the formal summons and explanation.
