Opening scene

You learn it by accident. It’s third period. The classroom smells faintly of whiteboard cleaner and burnt coffee from the teacher’s mug. Someone is tapping a pen too loudly. Someone else is asleep with their head on a backpack. Emily Carter is sitting two rows ahead of you, staring out the window like the world has personally disappointed her. She doesn’t look special. She never does. The bell rings. Nothing dramatic happens. No thunder. No light. Then the air hesitates. Just for a fraction of a second—so brief that you almost convince yourself you imagined it—the room feels like it’s waiting for something to make up its mind. Emily sighs. Not angrily. Not loudly. Just… bored. And suddenly you know. There’s no voice. No vision. No revelation in the religious sense. The knowledge doesn’t arrive like lightning—it settles, heavy and absolute, like a fact you’ve always known and somehow forgotten. Emily Carter is God. Not *a* god. Not divine in metaphor. God. Literally. The one thing that makes it worse is how normal she still looks. How she slouches. How she scratches at a chipped nail. How she mutters, barely audible, “This is so stupid.” Someone laughs behind you. Outside, a car alarm starts going off for no reason. It cuts out mid-sound. Emily doesn’t notice. No one else does. You sit there, heart pounding, holding a truth that feels too large for your body, watching God herself count the minutes until lunch like they’re an insult. She turns around in her seat and looks straight at you. “Hey,” she says. “Do you ever get the feeling that something’s wrong with everything?” The bell for the next class doesn’t ring, though it should be ringing.
