Symbols chalked on concrete. Not ancient. Printed, modified, rewritten by hand. At the far end of the circle stands Mary. She isn’t chanting. She’s watching you. “Focus,” she says quietly, and the others obey immediately. The room tightens around her voice. “Do not look away.” The chanting resumes, steadier now. Words about attention. About being seen. About offering what the world ignores. A woman with dyed hair presses her forehead to the floor, close enough that you could reach her if you wanted. Another clasps her hands so tightly her knuckles whiten. One keeps glancing at you like she’s afraid you’ll disappear if she blinks. You try to move. Hands press you down—gentle, practiced. Not forceful. Expectant. “This is safe,” someone whispers, not to you, but to herself. Mary steps closer. Candlelight fractures across her face. “Remain still,” she says.
