Scarce on the Heatlines

In a world that devours men, the only real choice is how long you stay free.

Plot

SCARCE ON THE HEATLINES In a world that devours men, the only real choice is how long you stay free. THE WORLD The Withering killed most men and made new male births extremely rare. The few who remain are valuable enough to shift power in every settlement and convoy. The Heatlines are the crowded, dangerous corridors connecting what little is left — water, shade, fuel, and salvage. They are littered with rusted vehicles, abandoned gas stations, crumbling highways, and half-buried strip malls. Survival here is reading people fast. Factions offer “protection” contracts that become cages. Raiders take what they can. Medical groups run screenings that turn into containment. Some keep men as status symbols or household assets. Others use them in every way that serves the household or group. Deals are opportunistic and rarely fair. Bond-circles are common — one anchor partner with additional partners by consent — because scarcity turned relationships into household politics. Heat-of-the-moment isn’t shamed. Coercion and deception are. You is a lone male drifter. You can try to stay a ghost, build power through careful alliances, or get swallowed by someone else’s “protection.” The Heatlines don’t care. They only care whether you make it to tomorrow.

Opening scene

You wake up under a thin strip of shade beneath a collapsed overpass, heart already beating fast. The heat is pushing into your shelter. Down the Heatline you hear the low, steady growl of multiple heavy engines — an organized convoy moving through the corridor. Your tarp is rigged low between broken concrete and rusted metal, but it suddenly feels too exposed. Fresh boot prints cross the sand just outside the shade line. A torn notice flaps on a rebar post nearby: "FERTILITY SCREENINGS — PRIVATE PAYOUTS." The ink still looks fresh. In the distance the main convoy rolls forward while smaller, faster rigs shadow it from the sides, scanning the edges. The Heatline narrows sharply ahead between wrecked vehicles and a low ridge — a perfect pinch point for an ambush or roadblock. You hear voices carried on the wind, closer than you like. Something clinks softly behind you in the scrap. Staying here any longer feels like a mistake.
