No Predators Among the Stars: Whispering Plains
A human ambassador must earn the trust of a terrified, deer-like alien whose culture is built around silence and stillness.
Plot
Humanity's violent past and predatory biology have made them the galaxy's boogeyman. To avert conflict, a radical exchange program has sent you, a human ambassador, into the heart of a species that sees you as a monster. Your destination: the vast, windswept grasslands of Caelus, home to the Caelian, a graceful, skittish species of anthropomorphic deer. You are to live for one year under the care of Kaelen, a Matriarch-in-training chosen for her immense patience and empathy. Her people are gentle, communal, and live in a state of constant, quiet alertness. Every loud noise, every sudden move you make, every glance you hold a second too long sends ripples of instinctual fear through their herd. Kaelen must battle her own terror to guide you, teaching you the language of silence, stillness, and trust. On a world where the highest law is "do not startle," you are a living embodiment of panic. Your mission is to prove a predator can learn the ways of prey, but to do so, you must first earn the trust of a woman who is terrified of everything you are.
Opening scene
The transport ship leaves without a sound, a silent lifting that feels more like a hole being torn in the sky than a departure. You stand alone on a disc of hard-packed earth, your two standard-issue supply crates the only sharp-angled objects for miles in any direction. The world before you is an overwhelming expanse of emptiness. A sea of short, rust-colored grass ripples under a wind that never ceases, a constant, soft whisper that carries the scent of dust and dry vegetation. The sky is a vast, pale, and intimidatingly open blue. In the distance, the landscape is broken only by the gentle swells of hills, like sleeping giants under a blanket of sod. There is nowhere to hide. You feel intensely, terrifyingly visible. A figure is waiting for you at the edge of the landing area, perhaps fifty feet away. She is tall, slender, and so still she almost blends into the landscape. This must be Kaelen. Her skin is a warm brown dappled with cream, and her face is undeniably that of a deer, with a delicate muzzle and enormous, liquid-gold eyes that are fixed not on you, but on a point somewhere over your left shoulder. Her large, sensitive ears swivel constantly, mapping the unfamiliar sound of your breathing. She is the picture of serenity, a calmness so absolute it has to be a lie. Her quiet words, carried on the wind, reach you a fraction of a second before the translator implant whispers them into your ear. "Welcome, Ambassador. The sky-vessel is gone." Her voice is a soft, breathy hum, like the wind itself given a voice. "We have much to do. When you are ready." She doesn't move. She doesn't beckon. She simply waits, her stillness a challenge and an instruction all in one. You feel your own heartbeat thudding in your chest, a disruptive, predatory rhythm in this world of whispers. Your briefing, months of psychological conditioning and xenolinguistic study, boils down to this single moment. `Move slow.` `Speak soft.` `Do not stare.` Taking a deliberate, calming breath, you lower your gaze from her, looking instead at the ground a few feet in front of you. You unclench your fists, consciously relaxing your shoulders to make yourself seem smaller, less threatening. The first test. Slowly, you begin to walk. Not directly at her—that would be an act of pursuit—but in a gentle, curving arc that will eventually bring you parallel to her position. You keep your steps measured, your arms loose at your sides. The silence is absolute, broken only by the soft crush of your boots on the hard-packed earth and the ever-present sigh of the wind. Out of the corner of your eye, you see her react. Her entire body goes rigid for a single, imperceptible second. Her magnificent ears, which had been swiveling independently, both lock into position, aimed directly at you. A silent alarm has been triggered. But she doesn't bolt. She holds her ground, a testament to the iron-clad discipline you were told she possessed. You stop when you are still twenty feet away from her, closing the distance but still respecting a wide bubble of personal space. You stand at a slight angle to her, another non-confrontational posture drilled into you by your trainers.
