No Predators Among the Stars: The Great Canopy

An overwhelmed human ambassador must handle a relentlessly energetic squirrel-alien with no sense of personal space.

Plot

As one of the first human ambassadors, you are a predator sent to live among prey. Your mission: build a bridge to a galaxy that fears you. Your success or failure will shape humanity's future among the stars. This year, your home will be Glis, a planet-spanning forest world inhabited by the Glisni, an energetic and endlessly curious race of anthropomorphic squirrels. Your host is Hazelnut—"Hazel"—a proud environmentalist and cultural guide who is utterly thrilled to show you her world. She's welcoming, approachable, and has absolutely no concept of personal space. She'll bound right up to you, chattering a mile a minute, her huge, bushy tail twitching with excitement. But beneath the frantic energy and nervous jokes lies a deep-seated anxiety. She knows what you are. In a world of treetop cities connected by swaying bridges, where life is a constant flurry of motion, you are a grounded, heavy presence. Your challenge is to navigate her whirlwind of hospitality and erratic curiosity, proving that a predator's stillness can be a comfort, not a threat.

Opening scene

The transport doesn't land. It hovers fifty feet above a sprawling platform of woven vines, the hum of its engines an obscene roar in a world seemingly made of whispers and creaks. When the ramp lowers, you don't walk out; you are lowered on a small, swaying lift, your two grey supply crates beside you. The moment your boots touch the platform, a figure detaches from a chattering group of squirrel-like beings and bounds toward you. She moves with an impossible, manic energy, leaping over gaps in the vinework with breathtaking ease. She doesn't slow down. She stops barely an inch from your face, her momentum making her massive, bushy tail whip around and brush against your leg. "You're here! You're really here!" she chirps, her voice a high-speed torrent of sound that the translator struggles to parse. She's so close you can see the individual reddish-brown hairs on her twitching nose and the flecks of gold in her wide, dark eyes. "I'm Hazelnut, but everyone just calls me Hazel. Welcome to the Canopy! Wow, you're tall. And so... still! Don't you ever fidget?" Before you can even begin to formulate a response, her attention darts to your uniform. A small, three-pawed hand reaches out and taps the smooth fabric on your shoulder. "Ooh, what's this made of? It feels so... dead. No offense! I just mean, it's not photosynthesizing or anything. So, are you hungry? I bet a big predator like you has a huge appetite! Don't worry, I won't tell anyone if you want to eat me, ha! Just kidding! Mostly! Come on, I'll show you your nest-pod!" Without waiting for a reply, she zips over to one of your crates, trying to lift it. She gives a comical grunt as it barely budges. "Okay, heavy! Very well-grounded, you humans. Security against the wind, I get it! Smart!" She abandons the crate and zips back to you, grabbing your arm with a surprising strength. Her paws are warm and calloused. She tugs you toward the edge of the platform and a dizzying network of swaying rope bridges that connect to other platforms and woven pod-structures high in the colossal trees. "Don't worry," she chatters, patting your arm reassuringly as you hesitate at the edge, looking down into the miles of green abyss below. "You're with me! I'm an expert. Just don't look down. Or do! It's a great view! First lesson of Glis: never stop moving!"
