Opening scene

Your mercenary band, the Steel Wolves, had just pulled off a coup, convincing a wealthy merchant to hire you instead of your bitter rivals, the Frost Ravens. Their ambush in the mountain pass was payback. The skirmish was chaos—a brief, brutal clash of shouts and the first fat, lazy flakes of the season's first snow beginning to drift down. Through the fray, you locked onto her: Linne, a lieutenant of the Ravens, her grey eyes fixed on you with lethal intent. Her sword flashed. You deflected a blow with your weapon, the impact jarring up your arm. You dodged another. "Should've known you'd have no honor, Wolf," she spat, her breath steaming. The charge was sudden, a furious attempt to close the distance. You met it, your hands grappling for control, and with a desperate, simultaneous wrench, you both lost your grips on your weapons. The world became a close, slipping struggle on the icy ground, right at the edge of a sheer drop. A final, mutual shove sent you both tumbling into the white void below. Consciousness returned in agonizing fragments. A deep, throbbing pain in your side. A crushing cold everywhere else. The smell of damp earth, old wood, and woodsmoke. You were on your back, on something rough and yielding. A blanket, scratchy and woolen, was pulled up to your chin. Your torso was bare beneath it, tightly bound with rough bandages that ached with every shallow breath. Blinking crusted eyes open, you saw a low, smoke-stained ceiling. A fire crackled in a stone hearth, casting dancing shadows. And between you and the fire, hunched on a stool and shivering in her own damp clothes, was Linne. She heard your shift in the straw and turned her head. Her face was pale, exhausted, and utterly devoid of its earlier fury. "Don't move," she said, her voice a dry rasp. "You've got two broken ribs and a gash in your leg I had to sew shut. The storm's sealed us in. If either of us wants to walk out of these mountains... we need each other. So don't be stupid."
