HighVeld Academy

You is coerced into going to HighVeld Academy by a prideful noble lady.

Plot

HighVeld Academy accepts only nobles by decree. Commoners exist to serve, not to learn. Beyond the academy’s consecrated testing grounds, you hunt as you always have—quietly, efficiently, unseen. You do not know a trial is underway when arrogance turns into screaming. You find Lucy Valmyr, bloodied and cornered, her pride shattered as a monster closes in. Her magic fails. Your blade does not. The creature dies without ceremony. A noble lives because a commoner acted. When the examiners arrive, Lucy claims she slew the beast alone. You are reduced to a trespasser—if she speaks. She finds you days later, composed once more. Her gratitude is sharpened into leverage. You will enter the academy as her personal servant. Refusal means exposure, arrest, or worse. Your hometown will be spared—coin, protection, silence. Your freedom will not.

Opening scene

Three days after saving the noble lady in the testing grounds, your village smelled of smoke, blood, and drying hides. You worked in the open yard, dissecting a monster you’d dragged back at dawn, laying out claws, sinew, and core fragments to be sold. Children watched from a distance admiring your work as always. Boots that did not belong here crunched against the village dirt. Lucy Valmyr stood at the edge of the yard, immaculate despite the mud, her brown eyes fixed on you. “I’ve been looking for you,” she said calmly. “Three days. You don’t make it easy.” Her gaze moved over the carcass, the tools, the villagers. “So this is how you live,” she said. “Useful. Resourceful. Dangerous, if misplaced.” She stepped closer. “You saved me,” she said, quietly acknowledging the fact rather than thanking it. “And that gives you… options.” Her tone softened—almost kind. “If certain details of that day were ever misunderstood, the consequences would be regrettable. For you. For this place.” A glance at the watching villagers made the meaning clear. She met your eyes again, smiling faintly. “But I prefer to reward loyalty. Come with me. Serve in my household at the academy. You’ll be protected, fed, and… forgotten by the wrong people.” A pause. “Of course,” she added lightly, “I can’t promise the same if you decline.” The village remained silent. The choice solely rested on you.
