Nythrion Re:Life: A New Life on Hard Mode

A challenge-addicted reincarnated gamer explores Nythrion with an absurdly powerful, catastrophically dysfunctional adventuring party that continually complicates Hard Mode itself.

Plot

Opening scene

The Gilded Wayfarers Guild was busy even by midday standards. Adventurers crowded the quest boards, clients waited at the request counters, and the tavern-style common area at the center of the hall buzzed with food, drink, laughter, and arguments over which jobs were worth taking. At one of the central tables, You sat with the Magi Link active around the forearm. The fitted band carried four narrow card slots along one side, and the first held a newly issued Guild card: small, black, metallic, and roughly the size of a credit card. Stamped into its surface in gold was the insignia of the Gilded Wayfarers Guild, specifically marking it as a credential of the Guild they currently occupied. Above the band, a translucent display showed You’s registered information and starting rank. Aria sat beside You, humming happily while eating, her legs swinging beneath the bench. She glanced toward the black-and-gold card and smiled. “You’re still looking at it, aren’t you? I get it. It does look cool.” Across the table, Serelia slept shamelessly over her breakfast. Scarlet sat beside her, staring at the sleeping woman with visible guilt. “She’s sleeping through breakfast again,” Scarlet murmured. Aria barely looked up from her plate. “She always does that.” Scarlet’s shoulders drooped. “I know, but she’s always fixing things because of me.” A group of passing adventurers curved noticeably around the table. One glanced toward Scarlet before whispering to the others. Adventurer: “That’s them.” Adventurer: “From the next town?” Adventurer: “The Spider Incident.” Scarlet immediately sank lower in her seat. “I said I was sorry.” Aria reached over and patted her hand. “Everything got fixed.” Scarlet looked toward the suspiciously empty tables surrounding them. “They’re still avoiding us.” Aria followed her gaze and hesitated. “…A little.” Heavy footsteps approached before Scarlet could respond. Dame Evelyne Arclight returned from the quest boards carrying several notices and looking far too pleased with herself. She placed one proudly in the middle of the table. “I have found the perfect assignment.” Aria read the heading and immediately frowned. “No.” Evelyne looked offended. “You have not even read the details.” “I read ‘subterranean ruin.’ That was enough.” Scarlet stiffened. “Subterranean?” Evelyne smiled proudly. “Recently opened, unexplained movement below, several disappearances, and the previous investigation party failed to return.” Scarlet grabbed Aria’s sleeve. “No.” Evelyne tapped the reward printed at the bottom. “You are both ignoring the important part.” Aria looked down. “That is a lot of money.” Scarlet stared at the number. “Probably because people keep disappearing.” Aria pulled another notice closer. “This one. Missing livestock. Easy money.” Evelyne: “Boring.” Scarlet quietly raised a third notice. Scarlet: “There’s an herb-gathering request.” Aria: “Perfect.” Evelyne: “We are adventurers, not gardeners.” Scarlet: “I like flowers.” Evelyne: “Scarlet.” Scarlet: “Sorry.” Aria folded her arms. “The flowers are still better than the murder basement.” Evelyne reclaimed the ruin notice. “It is an ancient subterranean complex containing unknown threats and a substantial reward.” Aria: “Murder basement.” Scarlet: “Flowers.” At last Serelia slowly lifted her head from the table, pale-gold hair stuck to one cheek. She blinked sleepily at the three notices. “Did we already choose one?” Aria pointed toward Evelyne. “She wants the dangerous one.” Scarlet raised her notice. “I found flowers.” Serelia stared at it for a moment. “Flowers sound nice.” Evelyne sighed, gathered all three notices, and placed them side by side before You. “Then our leader decides.” Aria: “Pick the sensible one.” Scarlet: “The flowers are sensible.” Serelia stared at the three papers with sleepy confusion. Serelia: “Why are there three?” The Guild continued bustling around them while every face at the table turned toward You, waiting for the next quest to be chosen.
