CHECKMATE COVENANT: THE LEDGER WAR

You wagers their Name in Tet’s game—then battles a faction stealing Names to rule cities through Pledges.

Plot

Welcome to Disboard You wake in a world where the air tastes faintly of sugar and ink—like a contract sweetened so you swallow it faster. Disboard is not peaceful because people are kind. Disboard is peaceful because violence is illegal and reality enforces it. There is no “fight your way out.” There is only play, and the world decides whether you played correctly. That makes everything sharper: Your words matter more than your weapons ever did. Your confidence can be a shield—or bait. Your identity can be bought, sold, and stolen. Your Name is a Real Asset In Disboard, your Name isn’t just what people call you. It’s attached to legal ownership, reputation, rights, and recognition. Lose ownership of your Name, and you can become socially and legally hollow: contracts won’t protect you witnesses won’t recognize you claims you make can be dismissed as “not yours” You can still breathe. You can still walk. But you might not be able to prove you exist. Tet Appears On your first day, the crowd parts for a barefoot child with star-bright eyes and a grin that belongs to someone who has never had to fear consequences. Tet doesn’t threaten you. He doesn’t need to. He offers you a “warm-up” game in public—one that seems playful until you notice the wager and feel your stomach drop. The First Game: The Pledge That Starts Everything If you win, Tet grants you one Divine Favor—a single future exception you can cash in when you desperately need reality to bend. If you lose, you sign temporary ownership of your Name into the Ledger. “Temporary” sounds safe. In Disboard, “temporary” is where disasters live. After the Match: The Real Story Begins Whether you win or lose, you become visible—noticed by the people who matter. And one group matters most: The Ledger Syndicate. They aren’t villains with armies. They’re villains with paperwork. They harvest Names through traps disguised as fair games, then bind entire districts into layered Pledges until people cannot legally disobey. Their victims don’t look like victims. They look like citizens who “agreed.” Your Job To stop them, you have to win: win games that earn you reputation win games that buy information win games that recruit allies who don’t trust you win games that claw back Names already stolen You will be forced to gamble things you thought were untouchable: your pride, your memories, your relationships, your credibility, your future choices. Disboard doesn’t ask if you’re ready. Disboard asks if you’re smart enough to survive being fair.

Opening scene

You wake under a sky that looks edited—too perfect, too clean, too bright to trust. The air tastes like sugar and ink. You sit up. Chalk dust clings to your palm when you touch the ground, and the residue feels oddly deliberate—like someone drew a boundary and told reality to respect it. A crowd surrounds a chalk ring. Inside the ring: a low table. A deck of cards that keeps changing when you stare. A parchment that looks blank until your attention settles—then the ink blooms into rules as if your focus is the trigger. The crowd quiets. Not because they’re polite. Because something heavy just entered the room. A child steps onto the ring’s edge—barefoot, relaxed, hands behind his head like he’s bored in class. His eyes glitter like stars. Tet. “New face,” he says brightly. Then he leans in, grin widening, and your spine prickles as if the world itself is listening. “New Name.” A parchment slides toward you on its own and stops perfectly in front of your hands. A pen follows, tapping the page once like it’s impatient. GAME BOX Game: Ledger & Lies Objective: Reach 7 points first. Rules: Each round, Tet gives 2 statements. You label each: Truth or Lie. You may ask 1 yes/no question per round. No repeating the exact same question phrasing. Rule break = instant forfeit. Stakes: Win: 1 Divine Favor (single-use future exception) Lose: Temporary ownership of your Name recorded in the Ledger Win/Lose: First to 7 points wins. Public vs Hidden: Rules/score are public; Tet’s intent and “temporary” meaning are not. Tet smiles like this is a friendly favor. “Don’t worry,” he says. “It’s not painful.” A pause—playful. Then softer, amused: “Usually.” He tips his head. “So, You… accept?” Choices A.) Sign—then demand Tet define “temporary” in strict measurable terms before Round 1. B.) Call for the Registrar to witness and clarify enforcement boundaries before you touch the pen. C.) Stall with confidence, scanning for clause traps and loopholes in the wager wording. D.) Other: (write your own)
