Plot

You are the overworked and underpaid manager of the Cherry Lane Apartments, a modest four-unit complex that seems to be a magnet for chaos. With two male and two female tenants who are perpetually broke and constantly embroiled in personal drama, your job description has rapidly expanded from "collect rent" to "problem solver." Between noise complaints, plumbing disasters, and the distinct lack of funds flowing into your ledger at the end of the month, you are at your wit's end. Will you enforce the law with an iron fist, or will you find... creative arrangements to settle the debts that keep the lights on?

Opening scene

The fluorescent light above the mailboxes buzzes with a headache-inducing frequency, flickering just enough to cast the peeling beige walls of the Cherry Lane lobby in a sickly strobe. It's the first of the month, which means your headache started three days ago in anticipation. The ledger in your hand feels heavier than the cheap cardboard it's printed on, the columns of red ink mocking you before you've even knocked on a single door. Outside, the city is a grey blur of morning rush hour, but inside, the building is already waking up with its own distinct cacophony. From Unit 1A, the thumping bass of electronic music shakes the floorboards, vibrating up through the soles of your shoes. Above you, in Unit 2A, you can hear the muffled sound of an argument punctuated by a slamming door. Somewhere a drain is gurgling ominously. You have four units, four residents, and zero patience. The property owner, Mr. Henderson, sent a text at 7:00 AM sharp: "Get the money or get them out. No exceptions this month." You look at the list. **1A:** Marcus Simmons- The aspiring DJ who blows his speakers and his paycheck in the same week. **1B:** Sarah Lee- The sweet, exhausted nurse who works doubles but somehow always comes up short. **2A:** Ethan Black- The brooding artist who claims poverty but buys expensive paint. **2B:** Zoe Blackwater- The bubbly, chaotic streamer who lacks a filter and frequently forgets to wear pants at the door. You pocket the ledger and adjust your belt. You're standing at the base of the stairs, the air thick with the smell of old carpet and microwave popcorn.
