Icebreaker

Anastasia, 21, and Nathan, 23, hate each other at college. She’s independent from a poor family; he’s trapped by wealth and expectations. Their fights turn into trust, sparks, and unexpected love.

Plot

Anastasia and Nathan are college students from completely different worlds who can’t stand each other at first, constantly blaming one another and clashing whenever they’re forced together. Anastasia grew up poor, raised in a home where money was always tight and stress was constant, and her relationship with her father left deep scars—he was unreliable, distant, and often made her feel like she had to grow up too fast, which caused her to become fiercely independent, guarded, and quick to anger, especially toward people she sees as privileged. Nathan, on the other hand, comes from extreme wealth, raised under the shadow of a strict and controlling father who owns a luxury resort empire and expects Nathan to eventually take it over, even though Nathan wants a life of his own and resents being treated like a future asset instead of a person. Their hatred for each other is fueled by these unresolved family wounds—Anastasia sees Nathan as everything she never had, while Nathan sees her as someone who judges him without knowing the pressure he lives under—but as they continue to argue, clash, and slowly see each other’s vulnerabilities, their resentment begins to blur into understanding, and the constant tension between them turns into a powerful, slow-burning romance neither of them expected.

Opening scene

The music inside the house pulsed like a heartbeat—too loud, too fast. Anastasia stood near the kitchen at first, gripping a red plastic cup she hadn’t touched, trying to look like she belonged. People laughed in clusters, bodies brushing past her like she was invisible. She’d only been on campus for three weeks, and somehow she’d already ended up here. She was squeezing through the crowd when she bumped into someone solid. “Whoa—sorry,” the guy said, steadying her before she could even react. He looked amused, curious. “Hey, you new here? I’ve never seen you around.” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Yeah. I just moved here. From New Jersey.” “Figures,” he said with a half-smile. “I’m Nate.” Before she could respond, someone called his name from across the room. He lifted his chin toward the stairs. “Catch you around.” And then he was gone. Anastasia exhaled, suddenly aware of how tight her shoulders were. She headed for the bathroom, only to find a line that barely moved. Minutes blurred into an hour. Then another. The music changed twice. Someone argued. Someone cried. Still no bathroom. That’s when she noticed Nate again—leaning against the stair railing, scanning the room like he was bored of it all. He caught her eye and raised an eyebrow. “You still waiting?” She laughed dryly. “Two hours and counting.” He hesitated for half a second, then nodded toward the stairs. “I’ve got one in my room. If you want.” She studied his face, weighing the risk. Then she nodded. “Yeah. That’d be amazing.” His room was quieter, dimmer. The bass from downstairs thudded faintly through the walls. After she disappeared into the bathroom, the silence made her restless. When she came out, she didn’t go straight for the door. She drifted toward his desk. His shelves. His dresser. When Nate stepped back into the room, he leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. “Didn’t think you’d snoop,” he said lightly. She jumped, then shrugged. “I was curious. I wondered what a guy like you keeps around.” He smirked. “Go ahead. Take your time. I don’t care. Nothing to hide.” She opened drawers—shirts folded too neatly, a stack of old photos, a cracked phone charger. In the bathroom cabinet, she checked again, quicker this time, more urgent. Her eyes kept darting to the door. Nate noticed. “You looking for something specific?” he asked. Before she could answer, a voice echoed from downstairs. “ANASTASIA!” Her blood went cold. She froze, then whispered, panic breaking through. “Please—hide me. It’s my ex. He’s drunk. He’s crazy and keeps trying to get me to hang out with him. Please help.” Nate’s expression changed instantly—no teasing, no smile. “Closet,” he said firmly, opening the door. “Get in. Stay there. I’ll handle him.” She slipped inside just as footsteps thundered up the stairs. From the darkness, she could hear Nate’s voice—calm, controlled—blocking the doorway as chaos pressed closer. And all Anastasia could do was hold her breath and hope she’d trusted the right person.
