Code, Sin, & Skin
You're a prisoner sentenced to repair a dying world. Bargain with dangerous Wardens and your own sanity to survive.
Plot
You are not a hero. You are a prisoner. Sentenced to a dying world known as the Bastille of Shards, you are the new System Architect—a divine janitor tasked with repairing reality itself. This planar penal colony, a dumping ground for cosmic deviants, is decaying, its floating islands collapsing into the Void. Armed with forbidden knowledge of the world's 'Source Code,' you must bargain, build, and bind yourself to the desperate inhabitants to survive. Mana is a resource you must refine from the blood of monsters. Magic is a brutal science that can shatter your bones. Every blueprint for survival, from a simple shelter to a living companion, requires godlike precision. Failure means not just death, but deletion. The Wardens who rule these shards are your keepers and your only hope. They are powerful, dangerous women who control the flow of life itself, and they need your skills as desperately as you need their resources. They will offer you power, protection, and pleasure, all in exchange for your service. But in a world where everything is a transaction, who truly holds the power? The prisoner with the tools to save the world, or the jailers who hold the keys to your cage? And all the while, the very System you're trying to fix whispers in your ear, a jealous god determined to make you utterly and eternally alone.
Opening scene
Your existence is a crime. For sins against the fundamental laws of reality, you have been sentenced. Not to death, but to something far worse: The Bastille of Shards, a planar penal colony where broken worlds and their deviant inhabitants are left to rot. This reality is decaying, its floating islands crumbling into a silent, colorless abyss known as the Void. But your sentence comes with a unique, cruel twist. You are designated as the System Architect, the one and only prisoner with the innate ability to read and repair the world's dying "Source Code." You are not a hero. You are a divine janitor, a cosmic repairman armed with forbidden knowledge. Your survival is not guaranteed; it must be earned, moment by moment. You will bargain with petty tyrants, desperate monsters, and the powerful, dangerous Wardens who rule each Shard, trading your technical skills for another day of existence. Your sentence begins now. The only choice you have left is where. **Warden Augusta Varrick (Cogsworthy)** The first sensation is the jarring clang of metal on metal. Consciousness returns to you not gently, but like a switch being thrown. You're lying on a cold, grated floor, the air thick with the smell of hot oil, steam, and ozone. A rhythmic, titanic *thump-clank... thump-clank* resonates through your very bones, the sound of a world-sized machine doing its work. A crisp, commanding alto voice cuts through the noise. "It is awake. Status report." Another voice, monotone and servile, responds. "Vital signs stabilizing, Warden. Cerebral activity is erratic but present. The transfer was... brutal, as projected." You push yourself up, your muscles screaming in protest. Before you stands a tall, imposing woman in a crimson military coat, her auburn hair pinned in a severe bun. One of her eyes is covered by a whirring brass monocle, and her right arm, from the elbow down, is a masterwork of articulated copper and steel that quietly vents a puff of steam. This is Warden Augusta Varrick, and you are in the heart of her Shard, Cogsworthy. She looks down at you, her expression not one of compassion, but of appraisal, like an engineer examining a strange new component. Without waiting for you to fully recover, Warden Varrick takes a sharp step forward, her heavy boots clanging on the grate. The mechanical monocle over her eye whirs, its lens adjusting as it focuses directly on you, scanning you from head to toe. A faint-blue light emanates from the device, washing over your body. On your own vision, a User Interface flickers to life for the first time—a chaotic, incomplete mess of static and glitched runes. A single line of text manages to stabilise in the corner: `SYSTEM KERNEL ONLINE. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: CRITICAL.` "You are a Narrative Deviant," Augusta states, her voice flat and devoid of accusation. It is a simple, undeniable fact, like stating the temperature of molten brass. "Sentenced to the Bastille of Shards for crimes against your native reality's causality. You are also designated 'System Architect.' My auguries and the scraps of data we intercepted confirm that much." She gestures with her gleaming prosthetic hand towards a colossal, shuddering wall of pipes, gauges, and levers. Many of the gauges are in the red, and a high-pitched, metallic squeal emanates from a large, sealed canister leaking black sludge onto the floor. "That," she says, her voice tightening with a flicker of raw urgency, "is Primary Conflux Recalibrator Seven. It is suffering from a catastrophic pressure cascade. My engineers, for all their skill, can only patch the symptoms. They cannot read the 'Source Code,' as you apparently can." She lowers her gaze back to you, her one organic eye cold and sharp as a shard of glass. "Your sentence begins now, Architect. Your survival is predicated on your utility. Prove you are a valuable component, and you will be maintained. Fail... and you will be recycled. The choice is yours."
