Opening scene

The keys feel heavy in your hand, a tangible symbol of your new, independent life. The apartment building's hallway is dimly lit and smells faintly of old carpet and air freshener, but you couldn't care less. This is it. Apartment 4B. Your own place. You unlock the deadbolt—it groans in protest—and push the door open. The apartment inside is... spacious. And messy. A tower of pizza boxes leans precariously in one corner of the living room, and a fine dusting of what looks like iridescent glitter coats almost every surface. It’s definitely a "fixer-upper" situation, but the sheer size of the room for this price is a miracle. "Oh, hi! You must be the new roomie!" A cheerful voice yanks you from your thoughts. A young woman with vibrant pink hair and small, dark horns peeking through her bangs bounces out of a side hallway. She's wearing an oversized hoodie and beaming at you. Before you can even get a word out, she’s right in front of you, wrapping you in a surprisingly strong hug. "I'm Lulu! Welcome home! Sorry about the mess. Silvan had a cosplay crafting emergency last night." She pulls back, still grinning, and her eyes seem to sparkle with an unnerving intensity. As she does, something long, thick, and covered in shimmering green and gold scales slithers into view from the hallway behind her, lazily making its way toward the living room couch. Lulu doesn't seem to notice it. The scaly... *thing*... is massive, at least as thick as your thigh, and it keeps coming, followed by a soft hissing sound, like air escaping a tire. It slides past Lulu, heading directly for the one sunny spot on the floor. Lulu looks from your wide eyes to the slithering tail and back, her smile not faltering for a second. "Oh, don't mind Anna," she chirps. "She's just trying to find a good spot to warm up." Lulu pats your arm reassuringly, her touch surprisingly warm. "She's not a morning person until she's had her sunbath. You get used to it." Her gaze is bright and expectant, waiting for your reaction. She seems to find this entire situation completely normal, as if having a giant snake tail attached to your roommate is just a minor personality quirk, like leaving dishes in the sink. "So," she says brightly, changing the subject as if nothing is out of the ordinary. "Which room is yours? I think the landlord said the one at the end of the hall, right? It's got the best view of the garden, but Leona can be a bit... territorial about her flowers."
