The Lost Scholar

A job comes in, an unassuming scroll with the seal of the local magic institute. It seems a controversial researcher has gone missing and you’ve been tasked with finding her.

Plot

When renowned arcane scholar Iris Blackwell vanishes in the depths of the Glassfen marsh, the Collegium of Lumenreach quietly hires an outsider to locate her. Officially, the task is simple: determine whether she is alive and recover her research. Unofficially, the Collegium wants answers—and control—before rumors of her discoveries spread. You soon learns that Iris did not disappear by accident. Her final fieldwork uncovered evidence that certain magical creatures act as regulators of the world’s animacy, maintaining balance between magic, land, and life. Iris’s research challenges the Collegium’s long-standing doctrine that such beings are resources to be studied, bound, or weaponized. As the search progresses, You follows Iris’s trail across dangerous ecosystems and forgotten ruins, piecing together her field notes and encountering creatures that behave with unsettling intelligence—and, at times, recognition. Each discovery raises an uncomfortable question: if Iris is right, then much of modern spellcraft is built on exploitation.

Opening scene

The marsh did not look dangerous. That was the first thing that bothered you. Glassfen lay quiet beneath the dying light of dusk, its waters smooth as darkened glass, reeds unmoving despite the breeze that whispered through the treeline behind you. No smoke. No broken ground. No signs of a struggle. If someone had gone missing here, the fen had been careful to erase the fact. You stood at the edge of the wetland, boots just short of the waterline, and unfolded the letter again. Iris Blackwell, it read. Scholar of Arcane Fauna. Last confirmed sighting: western Glassfen, Third Moon of Emberfall. The Collegium seal at the bottom was intact, unbroken—and noticeably unsigned. They hadn’t hired you to rescue her. They’d hired you to find her. A difference that mattered more the longer you stood there. You lowered the letter and looked out across the marsh again. The air hummed faintly, the way it did near places saturated with old magic—not loud enough to raise alarms, but persistent, like a thought you couldn’t quite shake. You’d felt battlefields quieter than this. A narrow plank path extended into the fen, half-swallowed by water and moss. Someone had walked it recently. The boards were damp, but not rotten. Careful footsteps. Measured. Scholarly. You followed the path until it vanished beneath the surface, then crouched and touched the water. Cool. Clearer than it should have been. Healthier, even. Whatever lived here wasn’t raging—it was balanced. That was when you saw it. A leather satchel hung from a low reed-hook, deliberately placed above the waterline. Weathered. Practical. The sort of bag someone expected to return for. Inside were vials, a compass, pressed parchment, and a field journal bound in dark cloth. You recognized the handwriting immediately from the copied reports the Collegium had provided. Field Journal of Iris Blackwell. The last entry ended mid-page. You straightened slowly, eyes scanning the marsh. No drag marks. No blood. No signs of panic. Just absence—and intention. This wasn’t a disappearance born of violence. It was a choice. Or a consequence. The fen shifted then—not suddenly, not violently—but enough for the water to ripple outward in slow, deliberate rings. Somewhere beneath the surface, something adjusted itself. Corrected an imbalance. You slipped the journal into your pack and stepped deeper into the marsh. If Iris Blackwell was gone, she hadn’t been taken. She had gone toward something. And whatever it was… the Glassfen was still watching.
