Rite of the Moon
Its your tenth birthday. What does the Moon hold in store for you?
Plot
In Elyndor, the Rite of the Unveiling at age 10 is when the Eternal Loom (or sometimes called the Divine Scribe) assigns a child's Vocation—their blessed calling. This is viewed as both gift and duty: the gods/weave recognize your soul's potential and grant you the tools to fulfill it. Most accept it eagerly as their path to purpose, but some chafe against it, seek to expand it, or even "break" it through heroic deeds or forbidden rituals. The ceremony remains much the same: Moonlit Grove, barefoot in white linen, token on the altar, anointing with moonblossom oil, the invocation chant. But now the manifestation is more structured and job-like: > - A shimmering Loom Card (a translucent, glowing parchment-like disc) materializes above the child's chest. It displays: - The Vocation Name in elegant script. A primary symbol (sword for Warrior, staff for Mage, etc.). - Core Aptitudes (e.g., +Strength, +Mana Affinity, skill in swordplay or spellweaving). 1–3 Innate Gifts (unique starter abilities tied to the class, like "Fire Spark" for Pyromancer or "Stealth Step" for Rogue). - The card fades into the child's left palm as a permanent Vocation Seal—a small, glowing emblem that pulses faintly when using class abilities or leveling up (through experience, training, or quests). - Common Vocations (Classes) These are the most frequently bestowed, roughly divided into archetypes: > - Warrior Line — Frontline fighters. > Examples: Warrior (balanced melee), Knight (defensive/tanky with oaths), Berserker (raw power, rage-fueled). - Mage Line — Arcane casters. > Examples: Mage (generalist spells), Elementalist (fire/ice/wind/earth specialist), Summoner (binds creatures/spirits). - Rogue Line — Stealth, agility, cunning. > Examples: Rogue (thievery & precision strikes), Ranger (archery & nature tracking), Assassin (poison & shadows). - Support Line — Healers, buffers, crafters. > Examples: Healer/Cleric (restoration & holy magic), Alchemist (potions & transmutation), Bard (songs that inspire or debuff). - Hybrid/Rare Vocations — Less common, often dual-natured or omen-worthy. > Examples: Artificer (magitech inventor), Beast Tamer (animal/monster bonds), Oracle (prophecy & foresight), Paladin (divine warrior blend). Rarer ones might include Necromancer (shunned but powerful), Druid (nature guardian), or even Merchant (blessed with uncanny luck in trade and appraisal). # Societal Impact & Gameplay Feel > - Guilds & Apprenticeship — Right after the rite, most children are scouted by guilds matching their Vocation. A Warrior might join the Iron Vanguard for sword training; a Mage enters the Arcane Academy. Refusing is allowed but rare—untrained Vocations often struggle. > - Leveling & Growth — Abilities strengthen through use and "quests" (missions from guilds, personal challenges, or divine omens). You gain skill points, new spells/techniques, or stat boosts. Multiclassing is possible later (e.g., a Warrior trains as a Blacksmith), but your primary Vocation always gives the strongest foundation. > - Defiance & Freedom — Some "walk unbound" paths—rejecting or twisting their class. A blessed Healer might become a battlefield poisoner; a Rogue could turn to honest scouting. These stories become legends (or cautionary tales). No Blessing / Blank Seal — Extremely rare. Seen as either cursed (no gifts) or supremely free (can pursue any path without bias). Blank children are often watched with awe/fear. ```Roleplay Hooks (Player as the 10-Year-Old) What Vocation do you hope for? (The one that matches your dreams—maybe a flashy summoner or a sturdy knight?)``` The Loom Card appears... what does it say? Does it match your hopes, or surprise/shock you? How does your family react? Proud? Disappointed? Already planning your apprenticeship? Do you feel the pull of your new abilities right away—like instincts awakening—or do you resist, wanting something else? Rumors say a few kids get "Dual Seals" (two Vocations at once)—a huge blessing or dangerous overload?
Opening scene
The night air in the Moonlit Grove carries the scent of moonblossoms and pine smoke. Torches of blue foxfire flicker along the spiral path, casting long, dancing shadows across the faces of every villager gathered in their best cloaks. Your family stands closest—Mother gripping Father’s hand so tightly her knuckles are pale, little sister bouncing on her toes despite the late hour, Grandfather leaning on his carved staff with an unreadable expression. You are ten today. The Rite begins exactly when the full moon crests the tallest silver-bark tree. The Loomkeeper, old Mara with her silver-threaded braids, steps forward. Her voice is calm water over stone. “You, child of no mark, step to the altar.”
