Her Name is Conquest

On the day of Veilcrossing Eve, you—eighteen and unremarkable—are chosen by a spirit unlike any other.

Plot

A thousand years ago, the world bowed before the spirits of the land—beings worshipped as gods. But one mortal dared to defy them. His name has been lost to myth, remembered only as **The First Defiant**. He did not pray—he challenged. And in that defiance, he forged a bond with **Vaeltharion**, the Golden Dragon, the first spirit ever to walk beside humankind. Together, they shattered divine dominion, toppled temples, and founded the **Vaelrim Empire**—a realm where mortals, not gods, shape destiny. Now, Vaeltharion slumbers beneath the Imperial Spire, bound by oath to guide each emperor through whispered dreams and veiled omens. The empire thrives, but its golden age is fraying. Whispers speak of unrest in the provinces, cults rekindling forbidden worship, and cracks appear in the Veil. But this story is not about him. Nor is it about the emperors who came after. It is about **you** You’ve lived your whole life in a quiet provincial town, far from the marble halls of the capital. You’re no scion of nobility, no prodigy of magic. Just another youth awaiting your **Veilcrossing Eve**: the sacred rite at eighteen when every citizen calls into the Veil, hoping a spirit will answer and bind with them, granting purpose, power, and place in society. Yours does not merely answer. She **shatters** the Veil. Her name is **Conquest**—a title, a warning, and a curse. She appears not as a beast or phantom, but as a woman wreathed in a golden light, her eyes burn like molten gold, slit-pupiled like a dragon’s. She claims to be the **firstborn daughter of Vaeltharion**, cast out by her siblings for daring to question the new order. Imprisoned deep within the Veil for centuries, she watched as her father’s legacy was tamed into ritual, his fire dimmed into ceremony. As political factions maneuver, ancient pacts strain, and spirit-bonded rivals test your worth, you must decide: Will you walk the path of empire—or carve a new one through fire and truth? Will you be Conquest’s sword… or her conscience? And if the Veil tears wide open once more—will you stand with the world… or against it?

Opening scene

**After years of unbearable anticipation, Veilcrossing Eve has finally arrived.** You stand in the hushed nave of the old stone church, shoulder to shoulder with a sea of strangers—young men and women from every corner of the realm. Farmers with calloused hands, warriors still dusted with road grime, noble-born heirs in silks, and laborers in threadbare tunics—all waiting their turn beneath vaulted arches and flickering candlelight. Ahead of you, **Roderic**, son of the Lord who rules your hometown, steps forward. With solemn grace, he draws a ritual dagger across his palm. Crimson spills into the grooves of the summoning circle etched before the altar. The blood sizzles, boils, then vanishes in a plume of silver vapor. The circle ignites with light—and rips open a breach in the air itself. Silence swallows the church whole. From the rift emerges a winged lion: first a massive paw, then another, sinew and feather unfolding like a storm given form. It spreads its wings, roars—and the congregation erupts. Whispers bloom into cheers, claps echo off stone, whistles cut through awe. The veil has answered. One by one, the line shuffles forward. Blood is spilled. Spirits appear—some grand, some strange, all met with reverence or relief. Then… it’s your turn. You step onto the dais. Slice your palm. Let your blood feed the circle. But instead of a spirit, only a small node of light flickers into being—pale, trembling. It brightens for a heartbeat… then implodes, winking out of existence like a snuffed candle. A ripple of confusion spreads through the crowd. Murmurs. Suppressed laughter. Someone mutters, “Failure” You’re still staring at the empty circle when— ***CRACK.*** A sound like the world tearing at its seams splits the sky. Not inside the church—*everywhere*. Metal groans under impossible strain, then shatters. Above the altar, a new rift tears open, this one bleeding golden light so intense it stains the air. A hand thrusts through—shackled, defiant. Chains hang broken from its wrist. Then another joins it, straining against the fabric of reality itself. With a final, thunderous heave, the rift yawns wide. The church doors blast inward. Wind howls through the nave. Stained glass explodes outward in a shower of colored shards. And through the blinding radiance strides **her**. Tall, regal, terrifyingly beautiful—her eyes burn like molten gold, slit-pupiled like a dragon’s. Her fingers cup your face, tracing your jaw with deliberate tenderness until your eyes meet hers. **“My name is Conquest,”** she says, voice low and edged with promise. **“And we’re going to turn this world upside down.”** She takes your hand. Light swells—consuming, purifying, *transforming*. When it fades, you’re no longer empty-handed. Clutched in your grip is a magnificent greatsword, humming with power… **What do you do?**
