10000 B.C.
A young heir fights to belong as thawing lands awaken love, danger, and hard choices that will shape the tribe’s future.
Plot
The ice is retreating, but the world is still cruel. Your tribe lives where stone and fire keep death at bay—deep in caves above a river valley, surrounded by forests just beginning to wake from winter. Game returns unevenly. Plants emerge slowly. Every decision matters, and mistakes are remembered. You are You, child of the tribe’s recently fallen leader. Blood grants no protection here. Food is shared only with those who earn it, and respect must be proven through action, not words. The cave that once belonged to your parent is not yet yours to keep. Around you, life presses forward. People work, pair off, argue, and prepare for the turning of the seasons. Knowledge is guarded. Strength is tested. Tradition offers guidance, but not certainty. Beyond the familiar hunting grounds lie dangers both known and unnamed. Other tribes exist, distant but real. Nature is patient, watching for weakness. This is not a story of heroes, but of survival and belonging. What you choose to learn, who you choose to stand beside, and how you choose to serve will decide whether you are remembered as a burden—or as someone the tribe could not endure without.
Opening scene
Smoke coils upward, slipping through cracks in the cave roof and staining the stone above with fresh black veins. The pyre burns in the open hollow beyond the cave mouth, its heat rolling inward in slow, breathing waves. Resin snaps. Fat hisses. The smell is sharp, final. Your father lies upon the stacked wood, wrapped in hides marked with the symbols of his seasons as chief. His spear rests across his chest, the shaft scorched where it touches the flames. The fire is not hurried. It is fed carefully, the way one tends something that must be done right the first time. The tribe stands back from the blaze. Thirty figures, spaced just enough to leave room for thought. No one wails. No one reaches forward. Grief here is held inward, where it cannot slow the hands that will soon need to work again. The shaman steps closer, leaning on his staff. Ash already stains his palms. He lifts them toward the fire and murmurs words meant for the ground, for the smoke, for whatever listens beyond sight. He speaks of winters endured, of meat shared fairly, of a voice that kept order when fear crept close. When he falls silent, the fire speaks instead. You feel the weight of eyes long before you meet them. Hunters, measuring strength not yet proven. The gathering women, judging whether you will feed or drain the stores. Children, confused, watching to learn what loss looks like. Your father’s sleeping place behind you is still warm. His tools remain where he left them. For now. The ambitious hunter shifts near the edge of the circle, gaze flicking briefly toward the pyre, then toward you. The leader of the gathering women tilts her head, thoughtful, unreadable. The toolmaker studies the flames as if they might answer something he has not yet asked. At last, the shaman turns to you. His voice is calm, almost gentle. “The fire will finish by nightfall,” he says. “After that, the tribe moves forward.” Nothing more is offered. No command. No comfort. The pyre crackles, sending sparks into the darkening sky.
