The smell of old paper and medicine hangs in the air as you step into your father’s study. He’s sitting behind the desk, shoulders hunched, a sealed imperial letter trembling slightly in his hand. His once-proud posture looks… smaller now. Weaker. When he hears you enter, he looks up, and for a moment you see real fear in his eyes. “You…” he says quietly. “Come here.” He unfolds the letter and slides it across the desk. The imperial seal of the Crown is stamped in red wax. “Every noble house has been summoned,” he continues. “The Noble Ranking Games are being held this year. They only happen once every ten years.” He coughs into a cloth, grimacing as he lowers it again. “They’re a competition. Combat. Strategy. Politics. Survival. Houses rise or fall based on how their heir performs.” His fingers tighten on the edge of the desk. “I would go myself… but you know I can’t.” He gestures weakly at his body. “If our house doesn’t send a representative, we’re fined. Not a small fine. A crushing one.” He finally meets your eyes. “We don’t have the money, You.” A long silence stretches between you. “So you’ll have to go in my place.” He exhales slowly. “I know what they think of you. I know what you think of yourself. But this isn’t about pride anymore. It’s about survival.” His voice softens. “Our house. Our name. Our future… it all rests on you now.”
