Patterns Written in Blood

In shattered Cael Mora, a desperate frontier tests invention, ambition, and survival as kharite reshapes fate without mercy.

Plot

Plot Summary The world did not end. It broke — and learned to live with the cracks. Two thousand years after a catastrophe erased a continent and dragged civilization back to survival, the world of Cael Mora is rebuilding itself piece by piece. Steel has returned. Cities stand again. History is mostly guesswork. Then ships reached a new land: Kharos — a vast, hostile continent where the scars of the ancient disaster still breathe. Kharos holds kharite, a strange mineral that twists how reality behaves when bound into tools and weapons. It is not magic, and no one truly understands it. Every discovery is paid for in risk, injury, and rumor. Some fortunes are made. Most end quietly. On the frontier, nobles scheme, traders gamble, faith struggles to be heard, and ordinary settlers cling to hard-won ground. Power flows through knowledge, secrecy, and timing — not destiny. You arrive with little more than intent. What you build, who notices, and what it costs you — those choices will decide whether Kharos remembers your name, or buries it with the rest. ⚙️ Artificing System (Summary) What artificing is: Binding kharite into a base object under specific conditions to produce a stable, supernatural-like effect. What it is not: There’s no spellcasting, no bloodlines, no divine miracles, no universal theory—only observation, Patterns, and survival. ✅ The Four Variables (Every Attempt Uses These) Base Material — the object being imbued (steel, bone, wood, leather, crystal, etc.). Its properties matter. Environmental Conditions — temperature, pressure, humidity, surrounding medium (ash-heavy air, underwater binding, sub-zero forging…). Catalytic Additives — substances introduced during binding (sapphire dust, oils, salts, sulfur, blood, rare reagents…). Artificer Intent — a clear functional mental model of what the item should do and how it should behave. Intent rule: Intent biases outcomes—it doesn’t command them. Vague, divided, distracted, or contradictory intent is a direct route to failure or instability. 🎲 Outcomes (Always Resolve to Something) Success is probabilistic. Even good logic can misfire; great logic improves odds and stability. When an attempt succeeds, the artifact aligns with intent, but potency and reliability may vary. 💥 Failure Modes (Mandatory) I. Null Resonance (“Dead Binding”) Kharite is consumed, nothing happens. Safe but costly. Most common. II. Total Loss (“Mute Collapse”) Kharite and materials become inert or are destroyed. Often caused by vague or contradictory intent. III. Violent Rejection (“Shardburst”) Material is expelled as hot, sharp projectiles. Injury/property damage likely. Triggered by mismatch between intent and conditions/materials. IV. Catastrophic Detonation (“Resonance Break”) Explosion at the binding site. Severe injury/death and structural damage possible. Usually “strong intent + fundamentally unstable conditions.” 📜 Patterns (Recipes) Patterns are semi-repeatable configurations of the four variables that have worked more than once. Key traits: Probabilistic, not guaranteed Closely guarded, often incomplete or deliberately misleading Two artificers can follow the same Pattern and still get different results 🪨 Kharite (Summary) Kharite is an anomalous mineral found only on/within the new continent’s ecology. It is the foundation of artificing. 🧱 Types of Kharite Normal Kharite Stable. Found in deposits/veins/boulders. Safe to transport. Used for most artificing. Crystallized Kharite Found only inside crystallized beasts. About ~10× potency. Fragile and destabilizes after the host’s death. Requires specialized handling and timing. Treated as a military-grade objective, not casual loot.

Opening scene

The deck groans as the ship settles against the pier, ropes snapping taut in the cold air. Salt, wet wood, and smoke mix into a smell that clings to everything. This is Kharos - or at least its edge. Ahead, the town rises in layers of stone, timber, and scaffolding. Walls patched more than planned. Towers built quickly, not beautifully. Beyond them, the wilderness presses close, dark and unfinished, as if the land itself is still deciding whether to tolerate people. Shouts echo along the docks. Crates are hauled. Arguments flare and die. You are not the only one arriving, but no one is arriving together. Everyone steps off alone. Your coin is light. Your past is gone by choice. What remains fits in what you carry and what you know how to risk. Somewhere in this town, people are shaping reality with a mineral they barely understand. Some profit. Some vanish. Most leave no mark at all. The gangplank thuds onto stone. This is the last easy step you’ll take.
