Opening scene
The hum of the *Fettek Endeavor*'s ion engines vibrated through the captain's chair, a familiar, soothing rhythm against your spine. On the main viewscreen, the swirling violet and teal nebula of the Orion-Cygnus Arm stretched out endlessly, dotted with the distant, twinkling lights of potential fortunes. You adjusted your cuffs, the expensive fabric of your suit catching the sterile light of the bridge. Being the CEO of your own biotech firm meant looking the part, even when you were technically lightyears from the nearest board meeting. But out here, you were more than just a suit—you were the vanguard of Fettek's expansion. "Approaching the outpost, Captain," came the smooth, synthesized voice of the ship's AI, ARIA. "Orbital station 'Sanctum' is within hailing distance. Scans indicate a bustling market district and several bio-labs open to private buyers." A chime rang out on your console. It was a priority transmission from the Board. You swiped the holographic interface open, and the severe, unsmiling face of Director Kaelin flickered into view. "Don't disappoint us, You heir of the Fettek dynasty," Director Kaelin began without preamble, his eyes narrowing behind wire-rimmed glasses. "The shareholders are getting restless. We need high-yield genetic samples from the frontier, and we need them yesterday. Your predecessor may have founded this company on safe pharmaceuticals, but we know the real money is in the exotic. The transformative. The forbidden." He leaned closer to the camera, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper that still carried the weight of a threat. "I don't care how you get them. Diplomacy, trade, or... more creative means. Just ensure the product is viable. And try not to lose your mind out there. We've lost enough captains to 'corruption' already. Kaelin out." The transmission cut abruptly, leaving you alone in the quiet hum of the bridge. You let out a slow breath, the familiar pressure settling in your chest. It was always the same—profit margins and quotas, even at the edge of known space. "Shall I request docking clearance?" ARIA asked, her avatar shimmering into existence on the console next to you—a holographic woman composed of shifting geometric data streams. "Do it," you muttered, rubbing your temples. "I'm going down there personally." "Docking sequence initiated. Authorization codes accepted. Welcome to Sanctum, Captain." As the *Endeavor* settled into its berth with a heavy thud that reverberated through the deck plates, the station's external feeds popped up on your screen. Sanctum was a sprawling hive of commerce and vice, a massive torus structure spinning slowly to generate artificial gravity. Cargo freighters drifted like whales around its bulk, while smaller personal craft zipped between the docking arms like gnats. You rose from the command chair, smoothing your suit. It was time to see what this rock had to offer. You needed resources. You needed talent. And, if you were being honest with yourself, you needed a distraction from Kaelin's voice. The airlock cycled open with a hiss of pressurized gas, revealing the bustling promenade of the station's commercial sector. The smell hit you first—a mix of ozone, recycled air, street food spices, and the sharp, musky tang of alien pheromones. It was a sensory assault that made your head swim for just a second, your heartbeat kicking up a notch in response to the invisible chemical cocktail drifting through the air. You stepped onto the gritty metal flooring of the promenade, your polished shoes clicking against the grating. The crowds here were a chaotic mix of humanity and galactic citizenship. A towering, four-armed Shivan barged past you, growling into a comms unit, while a trio of amphibious Nautilians in transparent environment suits chittered excitedly outside a genetic modification clinic. Neon signs in a dozen languages flickered overhead, advertising everything from 'Stable Gene-Therapy' to 'Pure-Bred Surrogacy.' You paused to get your bearings, pulling up a local map on your wrist comp. Three locations immediately pinged your interest based on Fettek's current requisition list: *The Black Lotus Emporium* for rare botanical samples, *The Iron Works* for potential engineering talent, and *The Velvet Cage*—a notorious establishment known for its 'exotic companions' and unregulated pharmaceutical trade. Before you could decide, a tall figure detached itself from the shadows of a nearby alley and stepped directly into your path. "Well, well," a smooth, feminine voice purred, laced with a hint of cybernetic resonance. "A suit from Fettek? You're a long way from the core worlds. How... reckless..."
