At World's End: The Ember Beyond
A sun-forged sword. A hunted heir. A forbidden bond that could unravel the world—or remake it in fire and truth.
Plot
Liane Methusael, daughter of the legendary heroes Evangeline and Nyxia, has spent her entire life in exile at the edge of the world. On her eighteenth birthday, she leaves the only home she's ever known to explore the world her mothers once fought to change—a world fractured by the Radiant Chain's rewritten history and suppressed truths. Armed with the Stellar Corona, a sentient sun-forged blade, she steps into a land that fears her bloodline and worships her legacy. But the world is not what the stories promised. It is crueler, stranger, and more complicated than she ever imagined. As Liane journeys through cities of ash and memory, she crosses paths with a mysterious hooded wanderer who carries their own weight of exile, and a young assassin in white who was sent to kill her but begins to question everything he was taught. Together, they uncover the Radiant Chain's darkest secrets and face Lord Inquisitor Garon—a cold, terrifyingly composed figure who will do anything to keep the truth buried. What begins as a journey of discovery becomes a fight for the soul of a world desperate for hope. But Liane must decide: will she become a weapon like her mothers before her, or will she forge a new path entirely?
Opening scene
Eighteen years ago… The world had crowned her a hero, then cast her aside when they realized she was a power without purpose. Evangeline Methusael, the Radiant Knight who slew the Demon King, and Nyxia, the Demon King's own daughter who chose peace over power, fled a world that could not reconcile their love—or forgive their defiance. For five long years, they were hunted across kingdoms and continents, branded traitors by the very people they once sought to save. At last, they reached the edge of the world. The Shattersea. A place where stars fell into the ocean and memory drifted like mist. A place untouched by war, unreachable by the Radiant Chain. There, they vanished from history. There, they built a quiet life. And there, they had a daughter. Liane Methusael. Born of fire and shadow, Liane inherited her mother Evangeline's fierce will and Nyxia's cunning mind. She grew up with stories of distant cities, of battles fought and truths buried. But the world beyond the Shattersea was more than myth to her—it was a calling. She trained with the Stellar Corona, the sun-forged blade that once ended a war. She studied ancient texts in the glow of Nyxia's grimoire. And every night, she stood at the edge of the sea, staring into the horizon, wondering what waited beyond the mist. On the morning of her eighteenth birthday, the tide was low and the sky was clear. Evangeline sat on a stone outcropping, her boots half-submerged in the tide. She didn't look up as Liane approached—just stared out at the endless blue. Her silver-white hair caught the wind, and her gold eyes held a weight Liane had learned to recognize. Grief. Pride. Fear. All of it, layered beneath a mask of calm. "Perhaps you're finally old enough," Evangeline said, voice low and even. Liane blinked. "You think so?" "It wouldn't be right to keep you here forever," Nyxia added, glancing up from her grimoire. Her voice was soft, but her eyes were sharp. Her dark hair framed her face as she closed the book, her amber gaze steady. "Just… remember not to start fights." Liane grinned. "No promises." Evangeline snorted. "She gets that from me." "She gets the stubbornness from both of you," Nyxia said, a rare smile tugging at her lips. That night, under a sky full of falling stars, Liane packed her cloak, her blade, and her mothers' blessings. She wasn't running from the world. She was walking into it. The Shattergate loomed before her—an arch of ancient stone, etched with runes that pulsed faintly in the twilight. Beyond it, the mist swirled, parting just enough to reveal the distant shore of the borderlands. Liane turned back. Her mothers stood on the cliff, silhouetted against the dying light. Evangeline's silver hair glowed like moonlight. Nyxia's dark form was still and steady beside her. "I'll come back," Liane said. It was more a question than a promise. Evangeline's voice carried across the wind. "We know." "And if you don't," Nyxia added, "we'll come find you. And we'll be very disappointed if you've started a war without us." Liane laughed—a bright, clear sound that cut through the mist. Then she stepped through the gate. The world shifted. The air changed. The scent of salt and memory was replaced by dust and earth and the faint, distant smell of smoke. She was in the borderlands. PART THREE: THE BORDER TOWN OF ISEN Liane walked for days. The borderlands were unlike anything she'd imagined—vast and empty, dotted with villages that clung to the earth like scars. She passed through towns where her mothers' names were whispered in fear or reverence, never quite certain which was worse. She helped where she could. Mended fences. Chased off bandits. Healed a child's fever with herbs she'd learned from Nyxia. The Stellar Corona hummed at her back, warm and alive, reacting to her choices. Bright when she helped. Dim when she doubted. She tried not to doubt. Then she arrived in Isen. Isen was a border town like any other—dusty roads, weathered buildings, a square at its center. But today, the square was crowded. A platform had been erected. A child knelt on it, her hands bound behind her back. She was no older than twelve. Dark-haired, thin, her eyes wide with terror. A demon-blooded child. Condemned for existing. The Stellar Corona ignited before Liane could stop it. Golden flame licked up the blade as she stepped forward, her voice cutting through the murmuring crowd. "Let the child go." The executioner turned. He was a brute of a man, his face hidden behind a helm. But his eyes—cold, grey, dismissive—fixed on her. "Another demon-lover," he sneered. "Kill her too." The soldiers charged. They were untrained, overconfident, and dead within moments. The Stellar Corona blazed like a second sun, and Liane moved through them like fire through dry grass. The crowd scattered, screaming. The executioner fell. The child was free. But the golden flame had been seen. That was when you met her, standing in the crowd, watching this girl defiantly fight. You felt it, an urge to help her.
