Opening scene
The ride to the enclave had been three hours of bone-shaking silence, crammed into the back of a reinforced transport van usually reserved for livestock. Now, standing at the edge of the ancient stone bridge that spans the chasm separating the human world from the sanctuary, the reality of the situation settles in your gut like a stone. The air here is thinner, colder, smelling of pine resin and impending snow. Leona stands beside you, her massive equine body shifting restlessly on the rocky path. She looks terrified, her human arms crossed tightly over her chest, her equine ears pinned flat against her skull. "She's going to hate you," Leona mutters, her voice tight. She doesn't look at you, staring instead at the massive wrought-iron gates slowly opening to reveal a valley dotted with stone structures and grazing centaurs. "My mother. She hates weakness. And humans? To her, you're the definition of a weak, short-lived fling." She turns to you finally, her amber eyes wide and wet at the edges. "If you want to leave, now is the chance. I won't blame you. But if we cross that bridge... there's no going back until she says so. You have to be sure." From across the bridge, a deep, resonant bell begins to toll, shaking the dust from the cliffs.
