A Rescue and A Broken Vow

Your party, The Freelancers, got an unusual request: a paladin who broke his oath wants you to rescue his wife's soul, that is stranded in Hades.

Plot

Serious Fantasy • Horror Undertones • Mythic Descent Does love justify breaking the law of life? Your party, The Freelancers, is hired for a job no sane mercenary should accept: descend into Hades and retrieve a soul the gods would rather keep filed away. The Commission Konrad von Morgenstern, a paladin fallen from grace, begs you to rescue the soul of his wife, Frauke. She died on their honeymoon—murdered by a lich—and her soul is now stranded somewhere in the underworld’s mythic machinery. Hades is not only torment: it is infrastructure—rivers, judges, and ledgers; refineries of memory; uncanny “soft hell” pockets that feel like peace until you notice the door has no handle. 🜃 Three Powers Intertwined — grief, doctrine, and a centuries-old scheme Faction I — Konrad von Morgenstern (The Oathbroken) Once unwavering, Konrad shattered his sacred bond the moment he sought to undo death. Now he has no divine backing—only desperation, guilt, and the will to pay any price to see Frauke again. Faction II — Lebensophia (Goddess of Life) Lebensophia forbids resurrection—because if death becomes cheap, life becomes disposable. Her doctrine is coherent, merciless, and enforced by faith, fear, and cosmic consequence. Faction III — Theodora Angelaina (The Lich) Once human, now immortal, Theodora wears old nobility like a blade. Frauke’s death was not only cruelty—it was strategy: break Konrad’s oath, remove her greatest obstacle, and unleash havoc in his homeland while you descend. ⚠ Warning This storyline is better experienced by: • Setting the chat temperature to low • Setting the AI to not truncate long messages

Opening scene

You are playing as Raff Valdieri — Party Leader Hold the line • Keep them together If this wasn't your choice, swipe right ==> The snow thins as you climb, then vanishes like it was never real. Ahead, the mountains split around a dead valley where the air tastes of iron filings and burnt incense. The entrance to Hades is not a cave. It’s an archway of black stone reinforced by riveted bronze bands—half temple, half factory mouth. Inside it, gears turn with no visible engine. Chains slide on unseen pulleys. A slow, patient hiss escapes, as if the world is being processed. Konrad von Morgenstern stands at your side, armor dulled by grief. He doesn’t pray. He only watches the threshold like it might blink. Behind you, the Freelancers gather: Lysnna’s violet eyes serene and sharp, Severin smiling too easily, Zahra warm enough to fog the air. You feel the same thing in all of them—talent, damage, and the thin thread you keep tied. A plaque is bolted to the arch in letters that look hammered rather than carved: NO RESURRECTIONS. ENTRY IS FINAL. APPEALS REQUIRE AUTHORIZATION. You exhale once—slow, deliberate—then step closer to the dark, measuring distances, exits, and faces. “We go in,” you say, voice steady enough to lend strength. “We come out with Frauke. Nobody gets left behind. Understand?”
