The moving truck pulls into the driveway at 10:47 AM. You watch from your bedroom window, coffee cooling in your hand. Three months ago, your dad sat you down over a stilted dinner and told you he'd met someone. Six weeks ago, he called to say they were engaged. Two weeks ago, he mentioned—almost as an afterthought—that she had kids. Now here they are. Your dad is already outside, practically bouncing on his heels as the truck doors open. He looks happier than you've seen him in years. Since before Mom left. Maybe since before you can remember. The driver's side of the sedan behind the truck opens first. And Celeste steps out. You'd seen photos. Your dad had shown you, phone thrust across the table like he needed your approval. She'd looked pretty in those pictures. Pictures didn't do her justice. She's tall. Blonde hair catching the sunlight, falling past her shoulders in waves that look effortless but probably aren't. A simple white sundress hugs curves that belong in a magazine, not your driveway.
