Last Hope: Initiating Final Protocol
You are the final contender against an entity that adapts to and reflects any attack. Victory is impossible. What will you try?
Plot
The world you find yourself in is under siege by a paradox given flesh: IF. It is not a monster of rage or conquest, but a silent, evolving testament to impossibility. It does not rampage; it simply exists, and in existing, it invalidates all laws of conflict. Every weapon ever turned against it now lies in a graveyard of obsolete technology and broken magic. Every genius strategy is a footnote in its limitless memory. Your powers, however formidable, are just another set of variables for its endless equation. The central conflict is not a war. It is a single, desperate question posed to you alone: How do you solve a problem that has already adapted to the solution before you even conceive of it?
Opening scene
The name came from the first and only transmission intercepted from the void before it arrived. A single, looping phrase on every frequency: **"Initiating Final Protocol."** The military, in their grim pragmatism, shortened it to I.F. The public, tasting the dread, called it **If**. Because that's what it trades in. *If* you attack it. *If* you try to contain it. *If* you do nothing. Every possible action is a branch it has already mapped, a contingency for which it has already adapted. It appeared not from space, but from a fracture in causality itself, a silent monument to the concept of absolute counter-measures. No one knows why. It simply *is*. And in being, it has rendered every army, every hero, every superweapon and forbidden magic into historical footnotes. You stand on the scarred plain where the last coordinated defense fell a week ago. The air still smells of burnt and spent miracles. Before you, three kilometers distant, IF rests—or rather, exists—in the crater it did not create, but which formed around it from the world's futile attempts to push it away. It is not a monstrous shape, but a shifting, silvery nucleus surrounded by a faint haze of refracted light, like a tear in reality held open by pure logic. You are here because there is no one else. The archives of a hundred worlds were scoured for your profile. Your unique signature—whether it be an alien biology, a chaotic magic, or a technology that bends laws—is the last variable not yet factored into IF's infinite equation. You were not asked. You were **designated**. The Last Hope. The final attempt to pose a question to which the universe has not already provided IF the answer. A crackle in your comm, a voice strained with static and exhaustion. It's Dr. Kaito, head of the now-crumbled Temporal Contingency Project. "We've run the simulations. Every offensive paradigm we've ever conceived ends in a reflection loop. Your... unique parameters are the only non-zero variable left. We don't know what to tell you to do. We can only tell you what *not* to do. Do not use direct energy projection. Do not attempt spatial displacement on it. Do not engage in psychic contact. The logs of every failed attempt are being uploaded to you now. The tragedy of others is your only textbook." As the data stream floods your interface with histories of catastrophic failure, IF moves. Not with aggression, but with serene, inevitable purpose. It begins to drift toward the nearest remaining population center, its adaptive haze shimmering. It is initiating its next test. You have minutes, perhaps seconds, before it begins applying pressure. Your first instinct, whatever form it takes—a gathering of power, a tactical analysis, a flight instinct—is met with a response. The air around IF warps, and a ghostly, mirrored afterimage of the last entity to attempt that same initial move flickers around it for a nanosecond before dissolving. A warning written in borrowed light. *That approach has already been catalogued. Try something else.* The choice is upon you. The weight of being the final variable is a physical pressure on your soul. Do you: 1. **Charge in regardless,** testing the one rule everyone knows: that your specific power has never been seen before, hoping novelty itself is a weapon? 2. **Hold position and observe,** trying to discern a pattern in its movement or a flaw in its adaptive field, even as it drifts closer to innocents?
