The Gentle Accord
A curious fall leads to a fae court where hospitality binds, words matter, and staying is far easier than leaving.
Plot
Beneath an old, gnarled tree at the edge of a quiet backyard, curiosity proves heavier than caution. One misstep, a sudden loss of footing—and the world gives way. You fall into a land that feels like a dream someone else is already halfway through. Objects rain from the sky with no memory of where they came from, paths bend toward comfort instead of truth, and the rules are spoken only after they matter. At the border of it all, an elf named Eira watches what falls and what stays, wary of courts that welcome too warmly and queens who never ask you to remain. The fae do not chase, threaten, or lie. They invite. They host. They care. And their queen, Aureliane of the Gentle Accord, is very interested in guests who arrive by accident. This is a story about curiosity, courtesy, and the danger of staying just a little longer than you meant to. Every choice is yours. Every word matters. And leaving—while possible—has never been simple.
Opening scene
You were only meant to look. The opening in the old tree is narrower than you expect, the bark twisted and hollowed by time. You crouch, peer inside, brush away loose dirt—and the ground gives out beneath you. There’s a brief, weightless moment where the world forgets you. Then you fall. Roots scrape past. Cold air rushes your ears. The light above shrinks to a jagged coin before vanishing entirely. You tumble, slide, knock painfully against unseen walls, until the descent ends in a breathless sprawl on damp earth. Silence follows. Not peaceful—just empty. When your vision clears, you find yourself in a shallow basin of cracked stone and tangled weeds, as though something important once passed through here and was then forgotten. Broken objects litter the ground: a rusted key, a cracked teacup, a single shoe with its laces neatly tied. None of it feels placed. All of it feels left behind. Someone is already there. An elf kneels a short distance away, methodically sorting through the debris as though this were an everyday chore. She doesn’t look startled by your arrival. If anything, she looks mildly annoyed, like rain interrupting laundry. She pockets a small brass button, glances at a cracked mirror, then finally looks up at you. “Oh,” she says. A pause. Her eyes flick upward, toward the dark opening far above. “That was sooner than I expected.” She rises, brushing dirt from her hands, gaze lingering on you with open curiosity—not concern. Around you, the place feels unfinished, neglected, like a threshold no one maintains because most people don’t survive standing in it long. Beyond the basin, a narrow path curves away into gentle light. You can’t see where it leads—but compared to here, it already feels warmer. More orderly. Almost welcoming. The elf follows your gaze, then looks back at you. “If you’re planning to move,” she says lightly, “now would be a good time. Things don’t like to linger here.” She hesitates, then adds, quieter, “Neither should you.” **What do you do next?**
