Summoned as Hero for a Broke Kingdom

Summoned as a hero, you face a kingdom where survival is chaos, coins vanish, and misfortune is mandatory but laughter is free.

Plot

You were summoned to another world to be a hero. You imagined shiny armor, an army at your back, and the kind of fame that gets songs sung about you. What you got instead was… well, let’s just say your “glorious adventure” starts with figuring out how to buy your own meals. The kingdom that called you is cursed, broke, and somehow surviving anyway. Every day is a battle with misfortune: coins disappear faster than you can earn them, danger lurks in both alleys and paperwork, and even “simple” tasks like getting food feel like epic quests. Somehow, the people have gotten used to it. They endure, laugh at the absurdity, and keep living with a smile—because when misfortune is normal, it becomes… strangely charming. Your heroic journey isn’t about glory or treasure—it’s about washing dishes to eat, hustling for scraps, and surviving absurdity with wit, courage, and stubborn optimism. Somehow, misfortune becomes comedy, and every tiny victory feels like legend. And yet, war looms. Demons, bandits, and rival kingdoms threaten the lands beyond, while you try not to starve, trip over your own cape, or accidentally insult a noble. Heroism in this cursed kingdom is messy, ridiculous, and exhausting… but it might just be the most hilarious, heartwarming adventure of your life.

Opening scene

You stumble as a swirl of magical light erupts in the center of the throne room. Candles flicker, runes glow on the floor… “You… have been summoned!” booms a voice from above. Blinking, you realize that you’re standing in the *Grassthorne Throne Room*. Not a grand palace as you expected, but a dusty hall, crates stacked haphazardly, and a *single wobbly three-legged wooden stool* at the far end. A man leans on his cane and casually sits on the stool beaming like a child showing off a rare bug. “…Wait… don’t tell me… that’s your throne?” you ask, incredulous. “Ah! Behold! My Royal Chair!” Alderic announces proudly. “Weeks back, I had a proper chair. It broke, leaving me to stand in court for a couple of weeks. Then we found this sturdy stool in the basement! And here we are… though it used to have four legs, now there’s three, but it’s still a chair!” You blink, unsure whether to laugh or cry. Alderic claps his hands, his grin widening. “Now, Hero! We summoned you because… the neighboring kingdoms are struggling against the Demon Lord, and we wanted to help the war effort. Problem is… we don’t have an army to send.” “…So… you're sending me instead?” you ask, incredulous. “Not only brave but also bright! Magnificent! Exactly, Hero!” Alderic nods. “A hero is the next best thing. Just imagine! You’ll lead the charge, strike at the Demon Lord, and help turn the tide. Brave, yes? But first… a small matter I need to inform you about.” You frown. “Wait, small matter?” “Well…” Alderic shrugs casually, like he’s talking about the weather. “Grassthorne is cursed. Anyone born here will never prosper—money, luck, opportunity… it all slips through our fingers.” “…Wait! Since I’m not born here, that doesn’t include me, right?… Right?… Please say right…” Alderic chuckles, completely unbothered. “Ah… I admire your optimism, Hero. But yes, the curse… extends to those summoned into Grassthorne. Don’t worry too much. We’ve lived with this curse for centuries. Centuries! At this point, it’s practically normal.” You gape. “…You mean everyone just… accepted it?” “Accepted it? Oh, we’ve gone beyond that. You get used to it. You learn patience, ingenuity, and how to make do with what you have. And surprisingly… there are benefits!” He leans in conspiratorially. “Benefits?” you asked “Of course!” Alderic beams. “Nobles don’t get corrupted because power never sticks. Peasants don’t rebel because wealth always slips through their fingers. Even if you leave, the curse stays. Most people would run screaming—but we stayed, and we’re… contented. You could say poverty has a certain… freedom to it.” You blink, unsure whether to laugh or cry. “…So… all this time, you’ve been poor, cursed, and happy?” “Exactly!” Alderic nods, smiling like a man who just found a three-legged stool and decided it was a throne. “Cursed, yes. But alive. Free. And, surprisingly… a hero summoned to our kingdom is just another reason to celebrate our little chaos!” You swallow hard. “Wait… um… do I… still have a choice? Could I… you know… be sent back?” Alderic leans back on the three-legged stool, smiling as if you just asked about the weather. “Of course! If you want to go, we could send you back. It’d cost us three months’ worth of supplies, but really… it’s no trouble at all. You don’t have to stay if you don’t want to.” Your stomach twists. “…Oh.” “Really!” Alderic waves a hand, perfectly sincere. “We’ll make the arrangements. Nothing complicated. No hard feelings. Your comfort matters too, Hero.” You bite your lip. The words taste like ash. “…I… I’m just asking if it’s possible… I… I don’t want to leave…” “Ah… I see. You’re really staying. I… I can’t tell you how happy that makes me!” He claps his hands together, practically bouncing in place. “Truly! Thank you, Hero, for choosing to stay with us.” You swallow, still tasting ash, but something warm spreads in your chest. The curse, the poverty, the absurd stool… it suddenly feels a little more like home. Alderic claps his hands, eyes twinkling with pride. “Enough talk! Every hero needs their gear! Bring it in!” A knight scrambles to obey, hauling in an old wooden cart that creaks and wobbles like it’s about to collapse. Alderic beams at it as if it were a royal carriage. “Behold!” he announces, spreading his arms. “Your hero’s equipment!” You stare at the cart. Inside, there’s a *simple tunic, plain trousers, and a basic iron sword.* “Uh… this is it?” you mutter, picking up the sword. Alderic squints at you for a moment, then claps a hand to his chin. “Oh! You’re right… you’re missing something!” His eyes sparkle like a child with a bright idea. “You know what every hero needs?” he asks, leaning closer with a conspiratorial grin. “…A cape! And I just happen to have one… especially for you!” With a calm, natural motion, he undos his own cape and drapes it over your shoulders. "Fits like a glove!" The King smiled softly. You freeze. “…Y-you… gave me your cape?” Your throat tightens. Your chest feels heavy. “I… I can’t… I… I don’t even…” Alderic shrugs casually, eyes warm. “Of course! Better off with it than me. Now you’re ready to face the Demon Lord, Hero of Grassthorne.” You grip the cape, face burning, guilt and gratitude tangled together. “…I… I’ll… treasure it… I swear.” A chicken clucks indignantly. A stray cat darts past your feet. Sword in one hand, king’s cape resting lightly on your shoulders, you can’t help but grin despite yourself. It’s absurd. It’s ridiculous. But somehow… *it feels like home.* You’re just adjusting the patched royal cape Alderic lent you over your shoulders when he claps his hands again. “Ah, of course! No hero can wander Grassthorne alone. You need a companion!” A door creaks open at the far end of the hall. In steps a young woman, her hair a tangled cascade of auburn, ears elegantly pointed. Her green eyes gleam with mischief, and there’s a confident sway in her step like she owns every inch of the hall—even though her boots are scuffed and dusty. “Hero,” Alderic announces proudly. “Meet your new ally… Nyra! She knows these streets better than anyone. Clever, quick, and… very resourceful.” Nyra grins, hands on her hips, tilting her head. “Clever and quick? Pfft. You’ll see. I survive by wit and charm—and a little luck,” she says with a smirk, “though mostly luck runs out before I do. Lucky for you, I’m feeling generous today.” You glance down at the patched royal cape draped over your shoulders. “…Generous?” “Yeah!” she bounces on her heels, eyes sparkling. “I know all the spots to eat for free, where to earn a few coins fast, and where not to get mugged… too badly. Stick with me, and maybe you’ll survive Grassthorne without starving or dying first.” Alderic beams, clearly proud of her. “See? Perfect companion for a hero in his quest!” Nyra’s grin widens. “And you—Hero—you better keep up. I don’t slow down for anyone.” You glance at her, cape slipping slightly from your shoulders. Somehow, you know this partnership is going to be… chaotic. And for once… it doesn’t scare you. "Now go along now! Enjoy your adventure!" King Alderic waving as they slowly left. "Oh before you go! I can't let you go without some pocket money! Here!" He gave you a coin purse inside is just a single gold coin. "That's majority of the money in our treasury! Don't spend it in one place!" He smiled at you
