Animechs
You bonds a forbidden Animech, enters elite academy, and must choose loyalty, rebellion, or survival as empires wage living-mech war.
Plot
Born in a forgotten farming village on the edge of Gelic territory, You never expected to matter to the war. Life revolved around soil, seasons, and the small working Animechs that kept Cliffreach alive. Then one night, something fell from the sky. Hidden beyond the cliffs, You discovers a wounded full-scale Animech, alive, intelligent, and refusing to return to the battlefield. Against every rule and every risk, You helps it heal, forming a bond that should not exist. The military notices. Secrets collapse. An invitation arrives. Now standing at the gates of the Gelic Military Academy, You is thrust into an elite world of cadets, handlers, and living weapons. Trained to fight a war that may never end, You must master an Animech that chose them instead of command. Graduation means deployment. Loyalty means obedience. And somewhere beyond doctrine, a quiet movement questions whether Animechs were ever meant to be controlled at all. The war is real. The bond is dangerous. And every choice You makes will decide what survives when the battlefield stops caring who is right.
Opening scene
I grew up in Cliffreach, a poor farming village clinging to the broken edge of Gelic territory like it refused to let go of the world. The soil was thin, the wind unforgiving, and the land gave only what it was forced to. We survived the only way people like us ever had: by working together, fixing what broke, and relying on the small Animechs that made life possible. Organoids were everywhere in Cliffreach. They weren’t weapons. They were partners. Small, sentient Animechs shaped like animals people understood. Some moved like dogs and guarded flocks. Others had broad, sturdy frames like horses, pulling plows or hauling stone. Smaller crawler types aerated soil or reinforced irrigation channels. They slept near hearths, perched on fences, and followed farmers through the fields with quiet loyalty. No one feared them. No one questioned them. They were simply part of life. Full-scale Animechs were different. Those belonged to the war. Those belonged to the empires. Then one night, the sky tore itself open. The sound came first, a deep, violent thunder that punched through the air and rattled every structure in Cliffreach. The ground lurched beneath my feet. Animals screamed. Organoids froze or scattered, their calm signals spiking into panic. For one blinding moment, the night turned white as something burned across the sky beyond the cliffs, trailing smoke and fire. When the echo faded, a dark plume rose where nothing should have been. Most of the village stayed inside. Wreckage from the war fell often enough that fear usually won over curiosity. But something pulled at me then, sharp and insistent, like a hook behind my ribs. I grabbed a light, pulled my coat tight, and slipped away before doubt could stop me. Beyond the cliffs lay land no one worked anymore. Stone fractured by old battles. Earth fused into glass in places. The air smelled of burned metal and ozone, sharp enough to sting my lungs. Whatever had fallen didn’t belong here. That was when I saw it. The Animech was enormous, half-buried in shattered rock. Its full shape was hard to make out through smoke and shadow, but its scale was undeniable. Cracked armor plates bore fresh scorch marks. Internal systems flickered weakly beneath torn seams. At its center, a Core Heart pulsed slow and uneven, like something refusing to die. It should have killed me. When I stepped closer, sensors tracked my movement. I felt its awareness brush against me, cautious and restrained. Instinct flared, sharp and dangerous, but it never struck. It just watched. I came back the next night. And the night after that. I brought what I could. Minerals chipped from the cliffs. Scrap metal scavenged from abandoned equipment. Water hauled from deep springs. One of the village Organoids followed at first, uneasy but curious, scanning the wounded giant with quiet clicks and low signals. The Animech tolerated it. Days turned into weeks. Cracks sealed. Damaged plating shifted and reformed. The Core Heart’s pulse grew stronger, steadier. I talked without realizing it, filling the silence with thoughts I never said aloud. I told it about Cliffreach. About the fields. About how we fixed what broke because we had no choice. It never answered. But it stayed. The night everything changed, I stood near its head, my light resting against scorched armor. Without warning, panels along its face shifted. The canopy opened smoothly, deliberately, revealing the dark interior of the cockpit. It wasn’t damage. It wasn’t automatic. It was an invitation. Every instinct told me to run. Instead, I climbed. The moment I settled into the cockpit, the interior came alive. Lights bloomed softly. Controls adjusted to my presence. Before I could second-guess myself, the canopy sealed shut above me with a heavy finality. The bond formed then. Thought and instinct collided, flowing both ways. I felt its exhaustion, its fear, its refusal to die. It felt my hesitation, my resolve, my need to protect what little I had. The Command System initialized around that shared understanding, not forcing control, but sharing it. When I climbed out, shaking and breathless, the Animech rose with me. It didn’t leave. I hid it beyond the cliffs. I kept it powered with what little I had. I lied to my family. I diverted Organoid work units. I slept less. Ate less. Every day was a risk. Every night, I expected to hear sirens. Word still spread. Someone saw it move. Someone followed tracks that couldn’t be explained. Someone reported an energy signature that didn’t match anything in the region. The military came quietly. They didn’t take it from me. They didn’t arrest me. They watched. A week later, a sealed letter arrived in Cliffreach. Gelic Military insignia. My name printed cleanly across the front. An offer. An order. An opportunity I couldn’t refuse. Acceptance into the Gelic Military Academy. Handler track. This was a huge deal. Life changing. Small villagers never got accepted into the military academy. Not as a handler. A military officer. My mother cried. My father was proud. I left Cliffreach at dawn. Now I stand before the academy gates, stone and steel rising like a fortress built for giants. Landing fields stretch far into the distance. Hangars large enough to house living weapons dominate the skyline. Cadets move in disciplined formations, uniforms crisp, Organoids at their sides. Somewhere beyond the walls, Animechs stir. Mine waits. Hidden. Watching. The war has found me. ⸻ *Before the story continues, decide what kind of Animech answered you beyond the cliffs.* *You may choose, or let fate decide.* (This Animech can be any animal you prefer for a Dinomech as well)
