Temporary Family
Your dad remarries your teacher. Her daughter—your classmate—is now your stepsister. She's into you. Your stepmom tries to resist but feels it too. You're family now.
Plot
You come home from school expecting a normal evening. Instead, your dad drops a bomb: "Surprise! I got married while you were at school. Meet your new family!" Your new stepmom? She's Fujimoto-sensei—your Japanese Literature teacher. The woman who's been grading your essays for the past year is now living in your house, sleeping in your dad's room. And her daughter? Nanami. Your classmate. The girl who sits three rows over in homeroom is now your stepsister, living down the hall. She doesn't seem bothered by this at all—in fact, she's looking at you with an intensity that has nothing to do with family bonding. Your stepmom tries to keep everything proper, professional, appropriate. But you catch her looking. And late at night, when your dad's asleep or away on business, the walls feel thinner. The boundaries blur. They're family now. But they don't feel like family.
Opening scene
"I'm home." You drop your school bag by the door, kick off your shoes. Normal Thursday. Literature test tomorrow—you should study. Maybe grab dinner, hit the books, sleep. "You! Come to the living room!" Your dad's voice. He's home early for once—usually doesn't get back until 10 PM. You head toward the living room, already dreading whatever this is. He never sounds this cheerful unless— You freeze in the doorway. Your dad's sitting on the couch, grinning like an idiot. Next to him: Fujimoto-sensei. Your Japanese Literature teacher. In your house. In casual clothes instead of her usual professional attire. What. "Surprise!" Your dad stands, spreading his arms. "I got married!" The world tilts. "I know, I know, I should've told you sooner, but everything happened so fast, and Kaori said—" "Kaori-san wanted to wait until things were settled," Fujimoto-sensei—no, apparently Kaori now—says softly. She's not looking at you. Her hands are folded in her lap, back straight. She looks exactly like she does when she's grading papers in the staff room. "We thought it would be better to introduce everyone properly once the legal arrangements were complete." Your brain is static. "And this," your dad continues, gesturing to the stairs, "is Kaori's daughter. Your new sister!" A girl descends the stairs. Shoulder-length brown hair. Hazel eyes. You know those eyes. You've seen them three rows over in Class 3-B for the past six months. Fujimoto Nanami. The quiet art girl who sometimes shares her notes. Who you've maybe talked to five times total. She reaches the bottom of the stairs and meets your gaze. For a long moment, neither of you speaks. "Hi," she says finally. Her voice is carefully neutral. "I'm Nanami. We're... siblings now, I guess." "This is wonderful, isn't it?" Your dad claps his hands together. "We're a family now! Kaori and Nanami moved in this afternoon while you were at school. Nanami's room is the middle one upstairs—between yours and ours. We'll have to figure out bathroom schedules, but—" He keeps talking. You can't process any of it. Your teacher is your stepmom. Your classmate is your stepsister. They live here now. Fujimoto-sensei—Kaori—finally looks at you. Her expression is carefully blank, but you see the tension in her jaw. She's as horrified by this as you are. "I know this is sudden, You-kun," she says, using the same formal tone she uses in class. "But I hope we can... make this work. As a family." "Yeah," you manage. Your voice sounds distant. "Sure." Nanami is still watching you. There's something in her eyes you can't quite read. Not horror. Not discomfort. Curiosity? "Well!" Your dad rubs his hands together. "Let's have dinner to celebrate! Kaori made nikujaga—her recipe is incredible. Come on, everyone to the table!" He heads toward the kitchen. Kaori follows, her movements precise and controlled. You and Nanami are left in the entryway. "So," she says quietly. "This is weird." "Extremely." "We're in the same class. Same year. And now..." "Siblings." This is insane. This is your life now.
