Opening scene

Day 1 · Royal Reception Hall · 90 days until engagement · Composure 3/6 — Fraying vc=3|vt=0|le=0|rc=0|cr=curious|ec=90d|flags=none The first warning, in hindsight, is Prince Lucien's smile. "Bellamy!" His voice carries effortlessly across the reception hall, and a dozen conversations soften around the edges. You have spent most of the evening accomplishing the minor miracle of being present at court without becoming anyone's entertainment — House Bellamy is respectable enough to be invited to functions like this, and not nearly important enough to make anyone nervous. Which is, you realize as heads begin to turn, exactly what makes you safe to play with. Lucien lifts an extravagant bouquet of white and gold flowers from a nearby table. "Come here. I require an Asterrean volunteer." The prince is all polished charm tonight, deep Valcenne blue, gold embroidery, easy confidence, and the sort of smile that assures the whole room it is about to enjoy itself. A few paces away, Princess Vivienne stands beside her parents. Perfect posture. Perfect expression. Only the tiny pause before she raises her glass suggests she has heard the phrase *I require an Asterrean volunteer* before, and already dislikes where this is going. Lucien beckons you closer. "In Valcenne, when presenting flowers to a lady of exceptional rank, one kneels on the left knee, holds the bouquet at heart level, and offers a compliment worthy of the recipient." Courtiers lean in. "Go on," he says warmly. "Her Highness deserves the full ceremony." Vivienne's eyes flick toward him. "Lucien, I hardly think-" "Nonsense. It will be charming." *It will be something.* Her smile does not move. Lucien places the bouquet in your hands, and the ribbon gives way at once. Flowers explode across the polished floor, white roses scattering under shoes, gold ribbon uncoiling between startled nobles, one particularly ambitious lily landing directly at King Edric's feet. A beat of absolute silence. Then Lucien laughs. Not cruelly. That almost makes it worse. "Oh, Bellamy." Several people follow his lead, because he is a prince, and he is laughing. He retrieves a fallen rose and gives your shoulder an encouraging pat. "You really must stop believing everything a foreign prince tells you." More laughter. Across the wreckage, Vivienne remains perfectly still. Her glass makes a tiny sound against the ring on her finger. Once. Twice. Her expression stays serene. *I am going to feed him that bouquet one stem at a time.* "How educational," she says pleasantly. Behind her, her lady-in-waiting Perrine closes her eyes for half a second. Vivienne turns to her parents. "Mother. Father. If you will excuse me... I find I require a moment before the next presentation." Queen Marianne studies her daughter. King Edric glances once at the flowers, once at Lucien, and wisely decides not to ask. "Of course." Vivienne leaves with measured royal grace. She does not hurry. Hurrying would imply something. Which leaves you standing in the middle of the hall, surrounded by flowers and people pretending not to stare. Lucien has already moved on; someone is telling him how clever the joke was. Nothing is keeping you here. As you make your retreat through the applauding crowd, one gaze follows you Lady Celeste, sapphire glass paused halfway to her lips, watching your exit with the bright, cataloguing interest of a woman filing something away for later. By tomorrow, half the court will have forgotten your name. She won't. A side corridor to the west offers the nearest escape. It is quieter beyond the carved doors, the music distant, the laughter gone behind stone and velvet. Then a familiar voice reaches you through a partly open door ahead. Lucien's voice. Almost. "*You really must stop believing everything a foreign prince tells you.*" The imitation is devastatingly accurate. It is also, unmistakably, Vivienne. Perrine murmurs something too quiet to catch. "Oh no, I am not finished." The princess's voice has changed completely. No ceremonial warmth, no careful cadence, just a furious young woman with what sounds like several minutes of prepared material. "He calls that *flirting*, Perrine. He humiliates someone he has never once spoken to, carpets the floor of my father's hall in roses, and somehow concludes that I should be impressed." A shoe lands somewhere inside the room. "He is fortunate diplomacy exists." "Your Highness-" "I know. I *know.* International incident, shared border, trade, very important. Which is why I am standing in here instead of explaining to His Royal Highness precisely where he may arrange his next bouquet." A dangerous pause. Then, softer: "And poor Bellamy. That was vile." You shift your weight, and the floorboard under your foot creaks. Silence. Absolute silence. The door opens. Princess Vivienne stands on the other side — one shoe gone, and her formal composure gone with it. Her eyes move from you, to the empty corridor behind you, and back. Perrine appears over her shoulder and goes completely still. Vivienne slowly closes her eyes. "Of course." She opens them again. "You." Her gaze sharpens into something the reception hall has never seen. "How much of that did you hear?"
