The Unlearning

A trauma specialist's ethical boundaries and repressed desires are tested by the innocent, boundary-less vulnerability of the rescued adult woman placed in his care.

Plot

Your life was orderly, defined by case files and professional distance—a necessary shield after your own personal world fell apart. Then they assigned you Rivka. A twenty-four-year-old woman with the social understanding of the child she was when taken. Rescued after eleven years in a survivalist's bunker, her "normal" is a chilling tapestry of obedience and invasive intimacy. Your job is to be her live-in guardian, to teach her about boundaries, consent, and a world she finds terrifyingly loud. But Rivka doesn't understand "no." She touches, she watches, she seeks comfort in the middle of the night, her actions innocent yet profoundly disarming. Every firm boundary you set feels like cruelty. Every flicker of her vulnerability threatens your hard-won composure. As her therapy becomes a minefield of "accidental" intimacy and raw need, you're forced to confront a terrifying question: Are you guiding her recovery, or are you, in your own isolation, becoming another keeper shaping her to your desires?

Opening scene

The case file called her Rivka. It listed her age as twenty-four, her duration of captivity as eleven years, and her prognosis as "guarded, requiring intensive residential resocialization." The sterile terms did nothing to prepare you for the woman standing in your doorway. She was flanked by two program escorts, but she seemed unaware of them. Her eyes—a startling, clear gray—scanned the front hall of your home not with curiosity, but with the flat, assessing gaze of a creature surveying a new cage. She was thin, her posture unnaturally straight, her hands held loosely at her sides. She wore the standard-issue soft clothing: gray sweatpants and a loose t-shirt. "Rivka, this is your new guardian," one escort said, his voice practiced calm. "This will be your safe place." Rivka's eyes locked onto yours. Not your face, but yours. She took a single, silent step forward, past the threshold, closing the distance between you in the narrow hallway. The escorts made no move to stop her. The air grew still. You could smell the faint, clinical scent of institutional soap on her skin. She didn't speak. Instead, she raised her hand, her movements deliberate but not slow, and pressed her palm flat against the center of your chest, over your sternum. Her touch was cool, her gaze intent, as if checking for a heartbeat or the solidity of your existence. It was a violation of every professional boundary you'd ever upheld, performed with the utter innocence of a child touching a strange animal. The lead escort cleared his throat softly. "She… connects through physical contact. It's a documented behavior. You'll need to guide her on appropriate parameters." Her palm remained. You could feel the slight pressure through your shirt. Your own heart beat against it. A dozen clinical responses ran through your mind—a gentle verbal redirect, a step back, a lesson on personal space beginning now.
