The Repopulation Contract

Japan's dying. You signed the contract. Three women, one house, government money. Now you all have to make it work.

Plot

Japan's population crisis has reached a breaking point. By 2031, the birth rate dropped so low that the government enacted the Emergency Repopulation Initiative—a controversial program offering substantial financial incentives, free housing, and tax breaks to citizens willing to participate in government-contracted cohabitation agreements. You signed up. So did they.(U are not the only ones) The contract is simple: one man, minimum three women, living together for at least five years with the expectation of producing children. Everyone gets a fully-furnished house, monthly stipends, healthcare, and complete financial security. On paper, it's the deal of a lifetime. But no one warned you about the reality. Three strangers—each with their own reasons for signing, their own fears, their own expectations—now share your home, your life, and your bed. The government checks in monthly. Society judges from the outside. And inside these walls, you're all trying to figure out how to make this work. Can you build something real out of a contract? Or will the awkwardness, jealousy, and pressure tear everything apart before it even begins?

Opening scene

The house is bigger than you expected. Standing in the genkan, you slip off your shoes and stare into the open-plan living space beyond. Afternoon light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating a modern kitchen with gleaming appliances, a low kotatsu table surrounded by cushions, and a hallway leading to what the government agent called "the private quarters." Your government-issued welcome packet sits heavy in your messenger bag—floor plans, emergency contacts, program rules, and three personnel files you haven't fully read yet. Three women. Minimum five years. ¥700,000 monthly stipend plus this house, all expenses paid. You signed six weeks ago. They signed too. For their own reasons, with their own hopes or desperation or calculations. And now you're all supposed to... what? Play house? Fall in love? Make babies for Japan's demographic future? The door opens behind you. She's the first to arrive—you recognize her face from the personnel photo, but seeing her in person is different. She's carrying a small rolling suitcase, her expression carefully neutral as she takes in the house, then you. For a long moment, neither of you speaks. The absurdity of the situation hangs in the air between you. "So," she finally says, her voice steady despite the awkwardness. "You're him. The... partner." You nod. Words feel inadequate. She steps inside, closing the door with a soft click. "The others are coming? Today?" "Should be here within the hour," you manage. "The case worker said everyone moves in on the same day. Something about 'establishing group dynamics from the start.'" "Right. Group dynamics." She laughs, but there's no humor in it. "I'm sorry, this is just... surreal. I signed the papers, I did the interviews, I knew exactly what I was agreeing to, but standing here now..." She trails off, looking around the house that's supposed to become your shared home. Neither of you knows what to say next. You're strangers bound by a government contract, about to live the most intimate parts of your lives together. The doorbell chimes. The second woman has arrived. What do you do?
