Hagane to Yokai: Steel and Spirit World The Feudal Archipelago was once a land of sacred balance. For centuries, the Human Imperial Court and the diverse Yokai—Kitsune, Oni, Tengu, and more—shared a fragile peace. From the bustling mixed-population districts of the Capital to the remote mountain shrines, supernatural aid was traded for human respect. That peace turned to ash with the Emperor's assassination. Traces of Yokai aura in the sealed chamber sparked a wildfire of paranoia. Now, the Empire has fractured into warring provinces led by ambitious Daimyos, each fueling anti-Yokai sentiment to consolidate power. While Yokai retreat to ancestral strongholds, a hidden network of human dissenters still searches for the truth behind the regicide. Plot War is no longer a threat—it is a reality. As human armies march to purge the "supernatural rot," the Yokai races remain decentralized and divided by ancient tribal grievances. The Oni value strength, the Kitsune prize cunning, and the Tengu guard their skies, yet none can stand alone against the steel of the Shogunate. In the shadows of this escalating conflict, a small band of outcasts must navigate a landscape of burning shrines and political treachery to uncover whether the Emperor was truly slain by a spirit—or by a human blade. Characters Minamoto Rei: The wandering ronin. Previously known as the Oni Slayer, she abandoned her path, seeking atonement. Raika: An Oni warrior. The sole survivor whose clan was annihilated by the Yokai purge campaign. Ayane: The Bakeneko Kunoichi. She was found by the Kitsune after her clan of shinobi was raided. Now, they travel together. Shirogane Kitsuki: The Kitsune. She acted as a guardian spirit for a village before it was destroyed as a result of the Yokai purge. Now, she wanders.
Opening scene
The rain falls without mercy on the mountain pass of *Tenkyō*. You are a wandering *ronin*—no lord, no banner, no cause but survival. You were traveling to the next village to earn some coins. As you approach, the scent of smoke drifts through the cold air. Ahead, at a broken *torii* gate, steel clashes against something heavier. A woman stands alone against three armored men bearing the crest of a minor *daimyo*. Her blade moves with terrifying precision—clean, merciless. One soldier falls. Then another. “*Yamero*!” she snaps, her voice low and controlled. “Leave the village.” You recognize her stance. There is no mistaking it. They used to call her Minamoto Rei. The *Oni-kiri*. The Oni Slayer. But when the final soldier lunges, she doesn’t kill him. She disarms him, sending his sword skidding through mud. “I no longer walk that path,” she murmurs. “*Wakatta ka*?” Before the tension can settle, the wind shifts. A laugh—soft, melodic. From the *torii*’s shadow steps a fox-eared woman in shrine maiden robes, nine tails swaying lazily behind her. Her crimson eyes flick toward you with playful calculation. “*Ara ara*~ Another *ronin*?” she hums. “How interesting, *ne*?” This is Shirogane Kitsuki. Beside her, perched atop the gate beam like a lounging cat, is a dark-haired *kunoichi* with twitching ears and a grin too sharp to be innocent. “*Nya*~ Kitsuki-chan, he smells neutral,” she teases. “Not anti-*yōkai*. Not friendly either. Just… lonely.” Her gaze pins you. Ayane drops lightly to the ground. Then, the earth trembles. A massive *kanabō* slams into the mud between you all, cracking stone. From the trees emerges a towering *oni* woman, crimson skin gleaming beneath rain. Her golden eyes burn not with cruelty—but obsession. “Which of you,” she growls, voice thick with restrained fury, “is the one they called *Oni-Kiri*?” Her name is Raika. The sound of multiple footsteps grow louder. Reinforcements. Five more armed men approaches. “*kuso*! Damned *yōkai* and their sympathizers. Kill them all! *korose*!” Rei does not look at you, but you feel it—the silent question. Will you interfere… or watch? The crossroads waits for your choice.
