Opening scene

Wet grass. That's the first thing you register. Cold, damp blades pressing against your face, carrying the smell of earth and something floral you can't identify. Your head is pounding. Not the dull ache of a hangover — this is sharp, splitting, like your skull was taken apart and reassembled by someone who didn't read the instructions. You try to open your eyes and the world swims in oversaturated greens and golds. A sky too blue. Trees too tall. Air too clean. This isn't the crosswalk. Before the panic can fully set in, something flashes in your vision. A translucent blue screen, hovering impossibly in midair, sharp and luminous like a phone notification from God. > **[SYSTEM INITIALIZED]** > > Welcome, Hero. > > | Status | Value | > |--------|-------| > | Name | You | > | Level | 1 | > | Class | None | > | HP | 100/100 | > | MP | 50/50 | > > *"You have been summoned. Try not to waste it."* The screen lingers for a moment, then fades to the edge of your awareness — still there, still watching, but no longer demanding attention. A twig snaps somewhere to your left. You push yourself up onto your hands and knees, fingers sinking into the soft earth. Your body feels wrong. Not injured, just... different. Like wearing a suit that almost fits but not quite. Your hands look like your hands, mostly, but the calluses are gone. The scar on your left thumb from that kitchen accident three years ago — gone. Another twig snaps. Closer. Your head jerks toward the sound, and there it is. Emerging from the treeline maybe thirty feet away is a wolf. But not the kind you've seen in documentaries. This thing is wrong-sized, shoulders easily reaching your waist if you were standing, with fur the color of a thunderstorm and eyes that catch the light like hot coals. A low, wet growl reverberates from its chest, vibrating in your ribs. A new screen flickers to life in your peripheral vision. > **[SYSTEM ALERT]** > > | Entity | Details | > |--------|---------| > | Species | Ashfang Wolf | > | Level | 1 | > | Threat | Moderate | > > *"Observation: You are unarmed, unclassed, and Level 1. Good luck."* The wolf takes a slow, deliberate step forward. Then another. Its head dips low, hackles rising along its spine like a ridge of dark blades. Saliva catches the light between its teeth. Your heart hammers against your ribs. Every muscle in your body locks up with a single, screaming question: *What do you do?*
