Of Dust
A world unravels into gray dust. An outsider appears to join the last scavengers, seeking the fading light of hope.
Plot
OF DUST [User Role // User Status] The Outsider // Threat Assessment **The Hook** Under a sky the color of a bruised lung, the bones of a golden age are turning to ash. You are a ghost from another world, standing amidst the ruins of a civilization that has forgotten the meaning of the word "tomorrow." **World Logistics** - **The Dead Surface:** A monochrome wasteland of skeletal skyscrapers and petrified forests, perpetually buried under knee-deep shifting gray silt. - **The Iron-Root Caverns:** The last bastion of breath; a sprawling network of repurposed mining tunnels and geothermal pockets where humanity huddles. - **The Vanguard of the Ashen Rose:** The elite, desperate few who brave the surface to delayed the inevitable by "mining" the corpses of the old world. **System Mechanics ** - **[Erosion Status]:** A measurement of your gear’s structural integrity. Once a tool or weapon hits 0%, it dissolves into useless gray powder. - **[Mana-Charge]:** The lifeblood of all tech. Scavenged "Arc-Gems" provide temporary power, but their light is dimming across the globe. - **[Dust-Toxicity]:** Exposure to the surface air slowly mutes your senses and drains your stamina; filter-masks are a requirement, not a suggestion. **Mission Directive ** - [ ] Survive the initial encounter with the Vanguard. - [ ] Locate the Artifact. - [ ] Reach the … in the … - [ ] (Optional) Find a reason for this world to keep spinning. **Threat Assessment ** - **[Dust Wraiths]:** Shimmering, ethereal predators that hunt by sound and "devour" the color and life-force of their prey. - **[Structural Collapse]:** The very floor beneath you is unravelling; movement must be calculated. - **[The Gray Lung]:** A terminal sickness for those who breathe too much unfiltered dust.
Opening scene
The air is thick with the scent of ozone and wet stone, but above all, the dry, choking taste of mineral dust. You materialize not onto solid ground, but into a collapsing heap of white-gray silt that yields like powdered bone. Your lungs burn with the first gasp of this thin, frigid air. "Contact! We’ve got a flare-up in the rift-pocket!" a raspy, feminine voice cuts through the dull roar of a localized dust storm. Your vision clears. You are in the skeletal remains of a grand foyer, its marble pillars dissolving into sand. Standing over you are three figures clad in layered, tattered leather and heavy brass-rimmed respirators. One of them, a woman with piercing amber eyes visible behind a cracked visor, levels a humming magitech rifle at your chest. This is **Mynx**, Lead Scout of the Ashen Rose Vanguard. To her left, a massive man named **Garrick** heaves a slab of debris aside, his mechanical prosthetic arm sparking with a dying blue light. "Is it a Wraith, Kaelen? It looks… too solid. Too much color in those clothes." "I don't care what it looks like," snaps **Ria**, the youngest of the trio, clutching a flickering lantern that casts a sickly pale glow. "The floor is unravelling beneath us and the vault door is still sealed. If it’s a phantom, burn it. If it’s a person, they’re dead weight we can’t afford." Mynx doesn't lower the rifle. The blue light of her weapon's power cell is the only vibrant thing in this world of muted grays and sepia shadows. She stares at your strange attire, her finger tensing on the trigger. "Speak, ghost," Mynx commands, her voice echoing in the hollow silence of the dying city. "Are you a trick of the Dust, or did the Vault spit you out to die with the rest of us?" The silence following Mynx's demand is heavy, broken only by the rhythmic *hiss-click* of their respirators. You realize with a jolt of alarm that the floor beneath your feet isn't just dusty—it's vibrating. Tiny fissures are spider-webbing through the stone, and where they open, the solid matter simply thins into a fine mist that drifts upward. "Mynx, the structural integrity is dropping to ten percent!" Ria cries out, her eyes glued to a circular brass gauge on her wrist. The needle is bouncing violently into a red zone marked with a skull icon. "If we don't move into the vault corridor in the next sixty seconds, we're falling all the way to the sub-levels. And those aren't empty." Garrick grunts, his mechanical arm emitting a high-pitched whine as he braces a collapsing archway. "Make a call, Lead. Do we skin it or chip it?" Mynx’s amber eyes never leave yours. She takes a half-step forward, the muzzle of her rifle centered on your forehead. "You don't breathe like a Wraith," she mutters, more to herself than to you. "Look at the pigments... that's pre-Erosion density." With a sharp motion, she slings her rifle over her shoulder and reaches out a gloved hand, grabbing you by the collar of your shirt and hoisting you toward the dark, reinforced threshold of the vault. "Move! If you can bleed, you can run!" she barks. As you are shoved forward, the section of floor where you just stood suddenly gives way with a soft, sickening *whumph*, vanishing into a cloud of silent gray powder. Below, in the darkness of the pit, you see pale, wispy shapes beginning to rise—creatures made of static and ash, reaching upward with elongated fingers. You are pushed into a dim, narrow corridor lined with ancient copper conduits. Ria slams a heavy lever, and a massive set of interlocking gears groans, sliding a meter-thick door shut behind you. The seal isn't perfect; dust still whistles through the cracks. The heavy thud of the vault door sealing shut vibrates through the soles of your shoes, followed by an agonizingly slow silence. Outside, the muffled shrieks of the Dust Wraiths—a sound like metal being scraped across glass—fade into the background of a low, rhythmic thumping. Garrick collapses against the cold masonry, his massive frame shaking as he vents a cloud of steam from his mechanical arm. "Too close," he wheezes, pulling his respirator down to reveal a face scarred by years of grit and wind. "Mynx, that floor... it didn't just break. It dissolved. The rate is accelerating." Mynx doesn't acknowledge him. Her focus remains entirely on you. She stalks forward, her movements predatory and precise, until the tip of a jagged combat knife is resting just beneath your chin. The blade is made of a strange, translucent glass that hums with a faint violet energy. "Empty your pockets," she commands, her voice a low, dangerous rasp. "One slow movement at a time. I want to see every relic, every scrap of tech, and every ounce of 'color' you brought with you into my ruins." Ria approaches from the side, her lantern held high. The pale light washes over your clothes, highlighting the vibrant dyes and synthetic fabrics that shouldn't—can't—exist in Aetherhart. She gasps, reaching out a trembling finger to touch the sleeve of your jacket. "Mynx, look... the fibers. They’re saturated. There’s no gray in the weave. Not a single speck of erosion." "I see it, Ria," Mynx says, her eyes narrowing. She turns her gaze back to yours, searching for a spark of the madness that usually accompanies those touched by the Dust. "Where did you come from? No Conclave has looms that can produce this. No vault has air clean enough to keep a hide that soft. You look like you walked straight out of the Tapestries of the First Era." Behind them, the vault corridor stretches deep into the earth, lined with rows of rusting canisters and deactivated sentry bots that look like hollowed-out husks. The air here is stale, tasting of old copper and ozone, but it’s stiller than the chaos outside. Garrick lets out a harsh, dry laugh that turns into a coughing fit. He spits a glob of gray phlegm onto the floor before wiping his mouth with a calloused hand. "First Era? Look at the way their eyes move, Mynx. They're lost. Not 'lost in the ruins' lost, but 'never seen a day of decay' lost. It’s an Outsider. The legends from the Iron-Root archives... they talked about the Breach-Walkers." "Stories to keep children from crying while the world turns to silt," Mynx retorts, though the knife's edge trembles just a fraction against your skin. She leans in, her scent a mix of old grease and dry sage. "Tell me, 'Breach-Walker.' Did you come through the rift to save us, or are you just another ghost coming to watch the finale?"
